I've owned a bunch of Subs, and one UN Maxi Marine Diver. UN is a beautiful watch, but sold long ago to get another Sub. In my opinion the Sub is just a more solid watch all the way around. It's built like a tank, far more reliable in the 3150 movement, and resale value on the UN is hideous at best!

I don't agree that the Rolex has a far more reliable movement. The ETA in the UN isn't your basic ETA in a no-name $1,000 Swiss watch or a mid-priced/low value TAG.

The poor resale value of the UN is also a positive for potential buyers who are willing to look for used models at substantial discounts.

As stated, I love UN designs, but movement reliability is an issue with this brand. This has not just been my experience, as having once owned one with reliability issues I did a lot of research and spoke w/ a lot of watchmakers (including UN's own) and other UN owners whom were having same issues!

As well, I never claimed that they used a base ETA! The irony here however is that I have owned countless ETA watches that were base movements that never had the issues the UN modified movements seem to have suffered!

Another example of a similar scenario would be the IWC big pilots watch and Panerai 312. Both watches are retail 6 to 12k, and both had huge reliability issues regarding their movements for the first 18 to 24 months of production, with watches coming back over and over again for not holding a wind!

I think it's safe to say that these are not base ETA's you would find in a Tag either!

had a blue un maximarine with resin/rubber/whatever band for a month... it didn't feel right on my wrist.

try a jlc or gp before the un imho. if you're looking for a nautical look, also try a corum admirals cup.

the rolex option is a no brainer.

Get the Sub. I got creamed on resale for my Sonata unless you know you'll never sell it.

Had a UN. Loved it at first then it grew boring. Well made. Unusual design - but a rare wrist sighting. Bought it right so resale was a non issue. Prefer the low key nature of an EXPII. Buy what sings to you!

My brother has a UN Executive whatever you wanna call it. Funky watch but I'm not a big fan and I can see people getting bored of theirs very quickly (especially when you wear it everyday like he does). He bought it because UN is respected by "watch guys" and has a superior movement to Rolex (his words, not mine). Of course, when I ask him what kind of movement it has the room goes silent. I respect other marques but only if they're bought for the right reason.

I have both Rolex and Ulysse Nardin watches.. They both make great looking and performing time-pieces..

Get the watch that you want to wear on your wrist the most...

This is a tough choice. The UN diver has been in my crosshairs for a long time. Ultimately,I think I would go with a Submariner, unless you really want to be different, then get the UN.

The UN Maxi Marine diver is a gorgeous watch and not nearly as common as the sub. I particularly like the white golf ball style dimpled dial. If bought second hand it can be had at a good value. UN's will cost more for service, but have a lot of elegance to them in my book.

BUT as others have said, buy what you like and are most likely to hold on to.

My experience re: the movement tells me different. I absolutely loved the looks and design...even the wrist presence of my Maxi Marine Diver (Black Dimple Dial). But, after 3 separate trips to the UN Spa in Boca Raton in less than a year because it just wouldn't hold a wind, I opted out!

Thinking back, maybe I didn't send it to Boca Raton Fl., perhaps I was sending it to Del Boca Vista instead.

This would explain why the watchmaker that kept charging me so much was named Mr. Kastanza!
