Rolex....Is It Your Hobby ???

I look over my small collection of time-pieces pretty often.

I'm always thinking of what I might like to have next, or why I just don't need another (or do I need another ?)...

Some might call me a collector as I have several Rolex, Omega, and Vintage Mickeys, and more than a dozen wall and mantle clocks...

But I see myself as a hobbyist.......

I see a difference....It's not just the collecting, it's everything about the time-piece that fascinates me, inside, outside, and it's history....yep, I see it as a hobby and a passion, and not just a collection or two..

One of several I have..

What about you..

What is it about the time-piece that gets your motor revving ????

Now there's a leading question.

I also have a mixed collection but mostly Rolex and Omega (plus Doxa and Heuer - not TAG). I am a collector, no doubt about that, but it also my hobby. I spend hours and hours reading about watches .It's more of an obsession really. Best not to think about it too much!

I would say that I am a hobbyist as well. I appreciate each of my Rolexes for their beauty and wear one every day. I am not aware of many other hobbies where you can invest a relatively small amount of money (compared to art, classic cars, etc.) and expect to get your money back or at least most of it provided you bought the watches right.

Good observation Larry. Collecting is more about the hunt while being a Hobbyist is the nuts and bolts of what you collect The history, the engineering etc.

I actually collect license plates for a hobby..beleive it or not. Not much nuts and bolts there..more collecting.

I could easily become a Rolex hobbyist if the $$ were there.

I can see it now:
JJ as our wool expert and we can have threads like "Do you sew with your left hand or right?"..."Did you get that sewing machine with a discount?"...and of course.."It's Friday...lets get stitchy with it!"

No Allan that wouldn't work as when JJ gets hold of the wool it is still attached to the rump of the sheep

Definitely, a fun, interesting, rewarding but expensive one.

Anyone who posts often here is active in the watch hobby (or to be more politically correct watch special interest group) otherwise you would just wear your watch and enjoy it by yourself. If you are reading and writing about watches it's a hobby even if you only have one or don't even have one but are really interested in Rolex or watches in general.

I have several other hobbies and I often jump from one to the other as a main interest but I always come back to each.

LMAO - you both know he's gonna come roaring in here sooner or later, saying things like: "How the hell did I get dragged into this thread? ©", or "What did I ever do to deserve this? ©", or "Oh woe is me ©"...

All this talk of JJ and sheep brings up a curious question. Does he ever get the wool pulled over his eyes, and if so, how often?

I am just happy I found something in life that I get so much enjoyment out of.

Family, friends, health, and my faith are all top shelf. But for hobbies watches sure are fun.

What do I like about them? To me it is like looking at a piece of art. In my pre WIS days a watch was just a watch. But now I look at the types of hands, What parts are polished or brushed. Clasp and bracelet construction and if the dial is balanced. Just admiration for a well put together watch.

That's neat, Allan. My Uncle-in-law collects license plates as well. Has quite a massive collection.

I like to think of myself as an enthusiast as to having a hobby. Most of us here would probably agree. It's great feeling to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and have something you enjoy to show for it. Not for the sake of "showing off", but more of self accomplishment. And being here to read and share our stories brings with it it's own reward and "extended" friendship.

I would have to say I collect watches and I am a Rolex hobbyist?

I love watches and would go as far as saying I can even get a little passionate about a few with Rolex and Doxa in particular. Don't know if I answered your question or not..But that's it in a nut shell!

I've always collected...

one thing or another. I've always liked miniature things; guess it started with toy boats and trucks when I was a kid.

Watches are exquisite miniatures; miniature machines that you can actually carry around with you and which serve practical functions as well as provide aesthetic beauty and excitement. And oh the variety to choose from. LOVE IT!!

Err buddy Larry...Orchi too considers to be more like a nutty hobbyist rather than being called a collector...

Apart from the Rolexes that Orchi keeps n wears on the wrists(or at times around the ankle) with pride n passion...Orchi has amongst few other mantle clocks...this old German Kienzle wall clock that's still running n chiming beautifully despite its old age...
