Flying in the Face of popular opinion once again...
Model: 16660 Serial#: 807XXXX(Originally a Matt Dial watch) Original Open six, off white, date wheel Really nice Thick Case Gorgeous Original slightly faded insert with Amber Tritium Pearl The Tritium hands and dial patch Perfectly and are a fabulous creamy off-white color...The photograph does not do them justice...  But the dial has Crazed...  Now the vast majority of people do not like Crazed/Spider dialed watches... They say they are damaged dials and are no good...Some even have gone so far as to call them "Garbage"... I myself on more then one occasion have said that I would "Never" buy a watch with a Crazed/Spider dial...Never!!! That is up until a few weeks ago...You see until that time I had never actually seen a Crazed/Spider dial watch in person...I was only going by pictures on the internet, and worse, by what other people said...  Now please understand, I am NOT, NOT, trying to convince anyone that they should like and/or purchase a watch with a Crazed/Spider dial...Not at all... More so, I am trying to illustrate the point that until you see something in the flesh, you never really know what works for you... I will not bore you with the details, suffice it to say that I ended up with the watch and decided, before I go and sell it, to wear it for a few days just for fun... I have since decided to keep it...!!! First off, I was surprised at how hard it actually is to see the Crazing... The watch must be held at just the right angle in order for the light to hit it correctly and show the imperfections that we call Crazing or Spidering... But I have to say, I think it looks so very cool...It reminds me of an old oil painting that has cracked over the years...Or of a wonderful old piece of pottery... I know many people have concerns over dial stability...Will it the paint eventually flake off??? I have done some research and have yet to find anyone who has actually had a crazed dial "Fail" on them...I have no doubt they exist, but I have yet to find them... These dials tended to craze almost immediately after they were issued, and have remained basically the same for 30 plus years...(Based on my research)...And the majority of people I have spoken to feel that the dials are basically stable and not going anywhere...So to speak... Could this dial possibly crack and flake, of course...But why live in fear! Are they damaged dials...Of course... Are they worth paying more for...No way!!! Are they highly collectable...I certainly don't think so... Would I consider them "Garbage"...No...Not at all...They are certainly not to everyones liking, but after finally seeing one in person, I think they are way cool... They are part of the Rolex and Sea Dwellers History, like it or not. And if you have a chance to see one in person, I would recommend having a look...  Once again, I am not trying to convince anyone or change anyones mind here...Just waned to pass on my own experience...And share with you, a very welcome addition to my Sea Dweller collection...

Clay, some collectors are just loonies, "spider" dial or not, you've got a very nice piece.
Some guys like faded bezels, some don't.Some like white tritium, some like it as as brown as witch's teeth.No matter what the details are, as long as the watch is in good health and original, it's all that's really relevant. Looks good man

Clay, I think you "nailed' all the high points regarding these dials. I have a GMT with that dial if you need another one for the collection!

I think you have a nice SD there. Patina matches nicely. And if anyone notices the crazed spider dial, just casually reply, " yes, that's one of the risks 4000 feet down..."

Thanks gang...
I did want to mention something else... I can't in all honesty say that I will now go looking for watches with Crazed Dials... This watch had all of the right things going for it (Case, insert, matching Patina etc) in combination with the Crazed Dial... I guess my point is that you really need to see a watch in person before poo-pooing it! |

I've been through exactly the same steps you describe, and a tritium Triple Six spider dial did it for me as well. I love it. Indeed you have to look at it from the right angle to appreciate those imperfections. They ususlly start to develop around the date Window.
