DD platinum or SS Nautilus
These seem like the two ultimate all-occasion watches. Suit, business casual, t-shirt, the pool, etc. Which would you pick for all occasions? Rolex Day Date / Day Date II platinum with ice blue dial or the Patek Nautilus with blue dial?
If you pick the DD say whether you pick the DD or DD II. |

I'll have to think about that one for quite a long time but right now I know I would go with a 36mm Day-Date all day, anyday before a Day-Date II.

I'd take the nautilus over any rolex... That is, any rolex made this century...

The platinum DDII is a pretty impressive piece of metal - I've heard in the neighborhood of 300grams. Definitely going to have greater presence than the Nautilus. Both are classic and appealing in completely different ways. That said, the Nautilus is going to be more flexible - I can't imagine wearing a platinum DDII with shorts, for instance. The Rolex, however, will undoubtedly be tougher and can put up with more abuse. The Patek has the obviously finer movement, but there is something very appealing about a massive hunk of platinum on the wrist.
Tough call. Gut feeling is the Patek. |

Ice blue Rolex Plat is gorgeous...but Patek is in a different league.

DayDate all the way. I'm bucking the general trend here but the DayDate 2 just doesn't do it for me. I know the TRF members love them and they are beautiful but the 36mm is perfect for my liking. As for the Nautilus it's a timeless classic but Patek watches I've heard from dealers and read in the WSJ are extremely fragile. Not very water resistant and basically should be treated like fine pearls - the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Good luck.

I would take platinum over a simple Patek. But Id take the chrono 5980 over the plat DD2.

Currently got a 5711 and now am working hard for a DD Platinum next.
But if I were to buy the DD first, I will still be looking to get the 5711 soon after. You just need to own both of them. They are just so beautiful.... |

DD Plat is one sweet watch. Can't go wrong there.

DD platinum or SS Nautilus
Haven't tried on the Nautilus so it's hard to say but assuming it's a Nautulus chrono I'd probably go with that. However a white gold or platinum DD II with black dial would be hard to pass up...

Two entirely different watches, and the platinum DD cost quite a bit more than the nautilus.
I would never get the platinum DD, because I would have to get the DDII and it's just to heavy for my liking.

If you don't mind the weight, definitely the DD2 Plat. That's the ultimate Rolex. But if the competition is a RG Nautilus, then it's a toss up for me.

Which Nauilus are you talking about? 5711, 5726, or 5980? The 5980 is closest in cost to a 218206 plat DD2.
However the 5711 is IMO the better comparison with Rolex as a do it all watch. While the Nautilus is at another level in terms of movement, finishing, and refinement; the DD2 is stunning in its heft and value. That's right... value. Try buying a full platinum watch from any other brand for less than a DD/DD2. It's also the more rugged watch of the two. As such, I'd grudgingly vote DD2 before Nautilus. However you really need BOTH. |

Well... I recently voted with my dollars. :)
It's a beast and I love it. When it comes to Gentas designs - lucky for me I prefer the RO to the Nautilus. One day I aspire to wear a Patek with complication(s) but this 284 gram hunk of .950 platinum was just something I had to have. It actually works pretty well with shorts. Not necessarily shorts and a t-shirt but shorts and a linen shirt really work with this thing.. |

Platinum DDII/// just so much more value, and it's a beauty
Patek may be in another league movement wise, yes… However they are OVERRATED, OVERPRICED ! Sorry to state it again, just my point of view and not so good experience. |

I am not sure I buy that they are the "ultimate all occasion watches"...BUT I for one love the juxtaposition that is a platinum rolex DDII with trunks in the pool! You are my hero mike. Both presented to me as a gift I would opt for the pt ddii. I only wish the ice blue ddii was available for 5711 money.

why want nautilus if the case made of stainless steel. its the same material of your spoon and fork. Platinum is jewel. |
