Help with choosing a vintage Rolex
I want to buy a men's vintage Rolex for my daughters 21st, can anyone advise me of where I can get one from. I had looked at Ludgate Watches but have seen they have got very poor reviews. I am looking ideally for something under £2000
Will this be possible? I live in Surrey but can go and view anywhere within M25/London areas. |

If you give us a sense of her style and what you're looking for, we could be more helpful. Is she a banker, or a designer? Will this be her everyday watch or to wear with a suit? Does she want to swim in it, or go rock climbing? That kind of thing.
I'm not as familiar with vintage prices in the UK, although I believe they tend to be higher than the US. While your budget is generous, it won't go too far in vintage Rolex beyond Datejusts, Oyster Precisions and Air Kings, but that's still a nice place to be. You can also consider Tudor if the Rolex name isn't vital. I just did a search on chrono24.com for men's Rolex up to $3200 USD (£2000) located in the UK and got 33 hits (and validated my prediction above). There are some very nice pieces in there. The best advice you will get is "buy the seller, not the watch." Be extremely wary of eBay, or better yet avoid it altogether. Check out the list of vintage dealers here, or buy from a trusted seller in the sales forum. I bought a vintage 5513 Submariner from a respected dealer in the US and it turned out to need repairs, which they are now doing free of charge as well as reimbursing my postage. So a good seller can make the difference between triumph and disaster. Austin Kaye in The Strand sell vintage Rolex, but my entire experience with them consists of peering in their window on a visit in June. Hopefully other London-based members will chime in. It's always nice to see the different models in person, even if just to inform your online shopping in the sales forum on this site or Vintage Rolex Market. The TZ-UK forum may also be a good place to look. Best of luck and congratulations on getting her to 21! I have a five-year old son and that seems a very long way off. Dave |
