After reading the last long Milgauss thread...
just wanted to say, I've learned a lot about the way AD's treat their clients--through years of game playing and quite a lot of BS. I've also seen many watches I did not buy double in price over a short time (Patek world.) I did not buy a few watches at OVER list because it seemed crazy or because it pissed me off that the AD was so 'greedy'. But then years later, it didn't matter. The watch that that seemed so over-priced and so expensive, now seemed dirt cheap and I wished I'd taken the deal.
The GV Milgauss is one of those crazy watches. 12K? 15K may seem dirt cheap in 5 years. I have a feeling it will be a 25K watch in a decade. Time goes by fast in the watch world. A few years... a few price increases... ups and downs of the economy..... The Daytona is EVERYWHERE--you can buy a Daytona ten at a time for about double list. Do you guys really think there will ever be as many GV's as DAYTONAS???? It's hard to think so, partly because the Milgauss will almost surely never be as sought after as a Daytona--it's too simple, no buttons and subdials. That fact alone would keep it relatively rarer. Anyway..... I've overpaid for watches, I've underpaid for watches, I've sold too low, too early, and too late. IN the end, I love the GV on my wrist, it's got a lot of depth and mystique. It wears beautifully and you've got to see it in low light--especially. Finally, my point: yeah, I'd pay over list up to a certain limit, at this time. If you love the watch and wear the watch and keep the watch, I believe it will become a stupid-expensive collectors item in the next decade... and when it's discontinued???? Fuggetaboutit. For those of you who hope that your AD will 'give' you a GV at list, I would not hold your breath. AD's are in the money making business. If they can sell the GV at 11-13K, why would they sell it to you at list? By and large, they will not. You may get one at list if you've spent a ton of money with your AD already, but then, in a way, you already paid your premium, didn't you--over the years of spending with him? My point is: you pay a premium one way or another for the really hard to find, super hot watches. I don't freak out about premiums any more--it's how the watch game works. Good luck! |

I haven't been to or talked to too many ADs; probably around 3-4. None of them has ever asked for over list on any watch. They have each told me that certain watches are not discounted and are sold at list, and that they never ask for over list.
Those hard to get watches are a (albeit twisted) way to maintain good relationships with clients. I have bought 2 Rolexes this year from an AD and plan to buy one more. At that point, I'll likely be in a position to get a Daytona at list from them. I feel good about getting watches that I like from this AD, especially when other ADs won't "allow" me to buy a Daytona, and the AD has sold me 4 watches, which is good for them as well. If you want only one watch and it's one that sells over premium, then your best bet is to pay premium to get it. No sense in buying watches you don't like to get to buy the watch you really do like. In such a case, you're throwing money away. But if you like multiple watches and your purchase of multiple watches gets you a "grail" watch from the AD, then I certainly don't view that history of purchasing watches as paying a premium over the years. Very different situations in my opinion. |

Personally,
There are plenty of watches out there that I would like to have.. There is not any one watch that I just gotta' have.. And absolutely none that I "gotta' have" at an inflated price.. Other's views may differ. I know that there are some that feel a sense of elation in having the latest hard-to-get model on their wrist before anybody else has one.. That's fine.. I don't feel one bit less proud, or less of a person for wearing a vintage Black Sub on my wrist next to a friend with the latest GV.... He has what he wants, and I've got what I want..

Hey, as long as you are happy...good for you. I am just too cheap minded to pay even MSRP. I only purchase pre-owned.

I guess when Rolex has solved the current production problems with the GV crystal (the ovens "baking" the crystal have been know to overheat/explode), more of the MG GV will be made and it will drop in price, at least on the "grey market".

Sounds like you are just trying to justify paying over list for a watch that you are truly in love with! It's a sickness for which there is no cure. I love the GV, too. Just wish it had a date.

First post is an example of a member just posting noise and trying to catch up with JJ. The second post is an example of an informative and useful post. |

Bo,
After I posted my comment I read yours and was joking that your post was of high quailty, as usual, and mine was just fluff. Sorry for the confusion. The first post I was referencing was mine (#4 the fluff) and the second post I referenced was yours (# 5 high quality and informative). I never meant to imply that the original post by Mostel was fluff. The fluff comment was for my post. Thank you for questoning (and letting me clarify) my post and not assuming I was being a horses a$$ toward another member. I would not do that, even in a PM. Bubba, seems like there was a temporary split in the space time continuum!!
Anyway, saw the black face Milly for the first time two days ago. Very nice. Very nice indeed. Looked great on the wrist too, but alas, unaffordable right now due to premium and recent purchase.... stay tuned... |

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if the Milgauss really gets hyped up on a longterm basis like the SS Daytona.
@ Joe: No problem.
