Is the dress watch dead?

What do you think?

I think too much of the theory is based on a movie series vs. the general decline in "dress" anything. The workplace and even formal events have declined into "dressy casual" and wristwear along with it...

I think you see less watches in general due to cell phones, etc. I would think the Bond movies have some influence but these days people are less dressy in general. Many corporations are mostly casual. I dislike dress casual, I like dressing up but dress casual is the way it is where I work.

I could care less what a fictional character in a mediocre movie series wears. Nor what the author at ask men thinks. But trust me, the dress watch is alive and thriving.

No the dress watch is far from dead and not only that, to me, it should be an essential piece in any serious collection.

No. Maybe not as serious a part of a chap's attire as it once was. Serious complications are dress watch territory.

Most men under 50 are pretty active today and sport watches suit their style more, plus 90% of the work places here in the states are business casual so I think a dress watch is on a slow decline...

I really like this article and feel the author makes a valid point. I too cringe whenever I see people wearing these giant steel underwater behemoths with unidirectional rotating bezels and depth gages to formal dinner gatherings and other dressy affairs. The author is clearly making a plea for the return of the proper watch for the proper occasion! :-)

I'm not quite sure what he's for or against... But what I do know is he claimed the dress watch is dead, and Rambo, I mean bond fired the bullet. Absolute crap writing, IMO of course

It's just satire. The author isn't trying to be Shakespeare!

Dying the same way that the percentage of daily suits are, I suppose.

I think this is one of the great iconic things about something like a DJ -- it works with a suit, yes, but is also just a little sporty, if on a bracelet.

Contrast with a very, very thin gold watch on a simple leather strap, like a Patek Calatrava or JLC Master Control -- the super-simple, minimalist watches look striking with a suit but are easily overwhelmed by sportswear.

I'm no fashion model, but I do subscribe to the above dress code.

It isn't dead. I love business casual and casual casual. Thank God for less stuffiness in the world. I wear dress watches with t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops because I can...

Ask Thierry Stern

He probably sells one of the best dress watches in the world, and I don't get the sense he's struggling selling them.

Ditto. Always interesting when people will comment I have a "fancy watch" for just running around. That's the beauty of being your own person ..wear what you want when you want :)
