Tips on buying first watch (submariner)

Hi guys

This will be my very first watch and I am looking at the submariner as my first choice since it's a classic design

Just a few questions:

- What year/series should i be really looking at ? I am interested in the V series but they seem a bit pricier compared to P and K series
- Apart from buying from reputable sellers on forums, is there any other way of telling its authenticity ?

If there's anything else, please let me know what should i look out for
