Which Daytona Will Hold More Value In The Long Run?
Excluding the PNs and those ultra rare prototypes and the bejeweled ones...
Which do you think will keep going up in value and will be a better piece to put money in? Vintage Daytonas (6263, 6265, etc..)? Or the modern Daytonas in precious metals (116528, 116505, 116509, etc..)? They are about in the same neighborhood in terms of pricing... Cheers friends :) |

precious metals never seem to do as well, especially when it comes to daytona's.

Id put dollars to doughnuts in the vintage set based solely on past data. Yeah the past is just that but the correlation is pretty overwhelming. Lower production, less available in good condition etc

I would vote SS vintage or even SS zenith movement, those look rather fantastic.

All of the vintage models with the Valjoux72 series movements plus the Zenith powered ones,as for the modern day Daytona forget it in all forms. But like most all Rolex watches today including the modern Daytona, they will hold a much greater proportion of original price paid than many other high end brands today.

Vintage. All is based on supply and demand; and since supply on these cannot ever increase, you just need an elevated demand.
I really don't think any modern Rolex will ever be a collectible like a vintage Daytona, Red Sub, or the illustrious moon-phase Rolex. I think mass-production, a larger appreciation for fine watches, and everyone holding on to them in hopes for the sky high sky high appreciation rate has killed the possibility. I'm no expert, but just my opinion. |

The best reference may be to check some if the auction catalogues from 10+ years ago and see how the SS models have done versus precious metals.....with the exception being those few Daytonas with porcelain dials.....actually, SS has still done better.
You have to buy and wear what sings to you the most, but Rolex won't make any more classics at the end of the day! |

I voted vintage, but it is relative, it's depending on what you paid in the first place. Find a vintage in a flee market or garage sale and you're laughing, buy it off an expert collector and you might never get the money back. As for the new precious metal models, one day they might only be worth their weight in gold and depending on the gold market that they, you could up or down...
