"What Rolex and Patek Say About Slowhand"

Nice article - link

AMONG THE MOST reticent of rock stars, Eric Clapton never speaks out about his watches—but he has sold a few, and they tell their own story. On July 5, 2003, for instance, a sale at Christie's in New York offered 25 of his watches: 23 were Rolex and two Patek Philippe—both best-return-on-investment brands. He shows a penchant for chronographs: 16 of the Rolexes and one Patek featured the stopwatch complication. Mr. Clapton also possesses an eye for rarity. One of the chronographs was a stainless steel Rolex Oyster Cosmograph (c. 1969), known as the Albino because the main dial and the three subdials are the same silvery color. The watch fetched $50,190 (£31,509).

Five years later, the same watch sold for $505,000 (£337,000). Another rarity that once graced the wrist of the hand that played "Layla," is a 1965 stainless steel prototype for the Rolex Yacht Master. The watch reached $125,000 (£78,285). The Patek Philippe chronograph, a rare pink gold watch from 1950, hit $175,000 (£109,825). In 2012, the guitarist's collecting bug once more hit the headlines when Christie's in Geneva sold what the catalog described as, "An exceptionally rare, very attractive and highly important platinum, perpetual calendar, chronograph wristwatch with moon phases, from the collection of Eric Clapton." Introduced in 1951—the first watch of its type from after the war—Patek Philippe decided to stop production of this model, known as reference 2499, in 1987. The final two watches in the run were cased in platinum. One remains in the Patek Philippe museum, the other was sold in 1989. Mr. Clapton obtained the latter some time in the 1990s. In the 2012 auction, it sold for $3,637,844 (£2,276,498), proving that in watches as in music, the man is no one-hit wonder.
