From 75K plus tax to 58K in one week...the new Platinum Daytona

just saw this auction end on ebay. Here is the link in case you did not see it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-Rolex-P...E:B:SS:US:1123

I wonder what discounts are to be had from an AD...not that I am in the market

Even at that price it is well out of my range

I would look to the plat DDIIs for a comparison point. The newness of the Plat Daytona is bound to wear off.

That's only a 20% discount, not really a biggie.

Even for being a fairly new, and some say limited, release?

I think 20% is pretty good although I want one for 30% off!

Also even though only a few weeks old and traded in still used with stickers off and not brand new.

Still pre owned with stickers off and that makes it a used watch.

My local AD was discounting a platinum dd with a diamond dial for 35% off. Their motivation was to reduce inventory by one piece in their platinum count.

It was the best deal at an AD that I would ever be able to receive. I tried it on and was tempted but decided to go with a YG DD instead.

Factually correct. However, I think most find it mind boggling that stickers on a watch could equate to thousands of dollars. In a way, I guess it isn't much different than losing thousands on a new car as soon as you drive off the dealer lot! This is why I prefer (gently) used watches and cars!

Too early in the day for the market price to be accurately determined.

It's all down to Rolex.

Keep the production numbers right down and the market value will remain $55k upwards.

Starve off supply and $70k is possible.

Discontinue the model and you've got a $150k + timepiece.

Slightly overproduce and all the dealers will end up will a dusty one in the window and one in the stockroom. Used prices will be gold Daytona + 20% perhaps.

Exactly my sentiments to the T! This is exactly what I told my collegue when he purchased his a few months ago. I informed his to wait, however, he had to have it... Oh well, good thing he keeps his timepieces!

IMHO it depends on your colleague's financial situation. I would assume he is VERY financially well off therefore saving $20K may not be a big deal to him. The few months extra or maybe even a few years of extra enjoyment he is getting being one of the first to own a Platinum Daytona may be priceless.

Do you need any manpower Sam? Whatever you're doing, I will learn it. Given the watches at your work, it must be worthwhile.

Hopefully they keep supply pretty limited to keep the price up.

Given his location of NYC and watching Wall Street, Goldman Sachs perhaps?

Only time will tell what the supply and demand scale will be with this one. I believe the MSRP is inflated on this one, and won't be shocked to see them selling for 30% off and then have it level off

I'm waiting for him to weaken on the price and I have a ROFR to buy it on the next price drop.

I'd love to have this watch and will eventually get it, that's why I got the YG DD with an oyster bracelet, so that when I get the Plat DD, it will have the president bracelet.

I got mine for a strong price and will wait to get Daytona for strong price too although not quite that strong! I am told by Rolex that they over released the Plat Daytona early to larger stores and now stopped so orders will take a bit of time. My guess is they will release slowly and demand will remain quite strong and mostly pre sold. Time will tell but my guess is that even in used market when they start to hit you will be at 30-35% off max and they will be few and far between. Just my humble opinion and one shared by some of our best grey dealers.

I talked to a sales rep/manager at Bachendorf's in Dallas last week. He said his store hasn't made the commitment to get one because they don't know how long it will sit. He said buying one from Rolex costs them $43k.

I don't know if that number is fact, a random number, a lie, or what. I'm just repeating what I heard.

Actually it costs $46.875 for AD to buy.
