Antiques Roadshow find

Latest episode from Detroit has a woman who found a small cardboard box full of watches in her Fathers office. She thinks they might be worth "a few thousand"...she's in for a nice surprise. A few Pateks, Cartier, Rolex and more.

yep, and it showed well in the close ups. Her 80 year old father was ill and they were "liquidating" his stuff when they found the box. Mostly from the 70's.
I hope my kids don't find my watches some day in a small box...with no understanding of the values. :)

Prices seemed inflated, which is often the case on this show. The ordinary steel Datejust was estimated at 3-4 K.

There was mention of this on the "Spotter" thread last week (starting with Post #937).

The criterion was "insurance value," which is in no sense the market value of the watches. I wish they would standardize by stating either all three values (auction, retail, and insurance) or just one. If just one I think the auction value would be the best for most participants should they ever decide to sell the item(s). If they sell to a retailer the items will bring retail minus the shop's profit margin, and insurance values are much higher.
