Universal Geneve

Hi TRFers. I've recently been seeing some cool chronos that a friend of my line on Instagram has been posting. The brand is Universal Geneve.

Anyone have any insight on the brand? In house movements? Quality? Etc. etc.

I think if you're into classic chronos and not want/afford to pay patek prices, the Universal Geneve tri-compex is a must have.

The movements in the old UG chronos were Valjouxs (in particular, the 72 and the 92). Are they any good? Well, the Valjoux 72 was used in some of the most iconic -- and valuable -- Daytonas, so that oughta say something.

Also, I think the Compax variants (in particular the Nina Rindt and the "racing blue") are far better looking than their Daytona counterparts.

(lousy pics, but still...)

Regards,
Adam

The vintage UG's included some models that are sought after classics. The Tri Compax and Polar Router are two that I'm aware of. There is a revitalized UG that uses the name, but I don't know what real connection there is to the original brand. I've seen a few of the new ones for sale, and they look very nice. I assume they utilize ETA movements but don't know that as fact.

check out this video with John Goldberger...they're beautiful watches. Harry Truman wore one during his Presidency.

UG does have some well built and very nice chronographs. They're not considered as highly sought after as some Patek's or VC's but remain a very good brand to consider if you want a good vintage chronograph.
