Expert advise needed for a GMT Master 1675.

Hey guys,

I have been looking for a birth year (1975) GMT master 1675 and have have been offered one for around $5900 USD which looks in great condition apart from the hands(Gmt and second hand) which need to be replaced. Does anyone know how much it would cost to find matching patina hands and also what do you the vintage experts think of this deal??

Apparently the watch has been in the family for years and been passed to down from a guys father in Spain.

Ive attached some pics for you guys to inspect.. look forward to your opinions on this matter.

Andy

I think for your price range you can do better waiting it out. Finding hands will not be a problem (though the right patina may be difficult), but add service and a new set of hands and you are over 7K. You likely have tritium in the movement.

From 6K or 7K even you should be able to find a more appropriate example waiting and searching (and the associated feel of the chase)

Even as these are climbing in price for good examples I agree with above. Keep looking for a really fine example at that range and with box and papers not out of reach imho. M

Thanks guys I was only thinking about this one as its my birth year 1975 but the thought of having to find new hands to put on it is putting me off a little. It only comes with box and no papers.

Just out of curiosity what would such a watch in that condition go for price wise that would be acceptable if I can drop the $5900???

You don't necessarily need to replace the hands. You could find an experienced guy to replace the missing tritium, dyed to match the current patina.

Like Linesiders, I would be concerned about that Tritium that's missing from the GMT and second hands - about how it became dislodged and where it went to. It is quite brittle and can powder, so some of it might have found its way into the movement at some stage. Certainly I wouldn't want to pay that price for something that might be suspect.

Stan.

Many do have missing tritium and many more have had it repaired, stabilized, relumed or whatever you choose to call it. It is normal for it to wear out and not uncommon to see it fall out or crack excessively. I had some fall out once after a hand was was removed from the dial during a service. The lume on vintage hands is very fragile.

Far too much. It's heavily buffed (poorly too), and that bracelet looks like it's a fake with perhaps a genuine clasp attached?

Honestly get the best example you can find. The serial number business is a gues-estimate for the most part.

Do you have other pictures of the bracelet/clasp?

I would prefer to see better pictures to hold my comment on it.

Seems like you're very keen on this one. I wouldn't buy it. IMHO, $5.5K is still a lot, as you need to get the hands repaired or replaced, unless you like that look...

Only reason I am still thinking about it is because its a 1975 model which is my birth year, I think I will pass and keep looking for that right one...
