Warranty service/accuracy question

I have a question regarding whether a watch should be taken in for service while under factory warranty or not. When should one become concerned enough about the accuracy to have it checked out i.e. if it is just a bit out of COSC (say running -6 sec or +8 sec) or not unless it is far more out (say -10/12, +12/14)?

If it was mine, I would take it in while it is still under warranty.

COSC is irrelevant and is bandied around too much on Forums. It is only the criteria that encompasses the Chronometer test conducted by the COSC organization, not Rolex. Once COSC tested and Chronometer certified, they are never tested again

If your watch is running outside what you think it should (be reasonable, any mechanical watch will not run spot-on), take it in to have it regulated. Regulation is a simple procedure and doesn't take very long, although if you let the watchmaker keep it for a few days he/she can include temperature etc.

It likely doesn't need a "service" which is generally considered a rebuild and Rolex doesn't service a watch under warranty unless there is a manufacturing defect that needs correcting.

Personally, 5 seconds is my limit and I have taken in my favorites when they are more than 3+ seconds out

Just a few seconds off your expectations would be better for an adjustment, not a full service.

BTW, the RSC nor ADs do them under warranty unless there is a defect. And a few seconds isn't one of those.

As long as its within the -4 to +6 range or a little over would not bother me after all there are 86400 seconds in a day and its not life threatening to loose or gain a few either way .But would bother me in the length of time it would take the RSC to regulate the watch as much as 2-4 weeks unless you live near one then its possible they might do it while you wait.Today regulation is a very very simple task for any good watchmaker takes around 30 minutes tops, its accomplished by turning the Microstella adjustment screws and nuts. The two smaller Microstella screws make adjustments of one second for each turn, and the larger Microstella, two seconds for one turn, but rate adjustment, but must be done opposite to each other to keep the balance on the balance wheel. But its only around a max of around 150 seconds either way total regualtion. And you need a microstella special tool and a timing machine although its quite a easy job if not skilled best left to the professionals

I had a situation where a new TT Sub started out -1/day but by the end of 3-4 weeks had slipped to -5/day. I sent it in not due to the -5 but the slippage from -1 to -5. When it came back and thru today, it is now +1/day and is holding that accuracy.

I have had my GMT IIC and DSSD regulated by the NY RSC while they were under warranty. In fact, they were both times they were done while I waited and both times it took approximately 1/2 and hour. They were very happy to provide this service.

Yes thanks for the clarification. I wasn't clear in my post - they will do an adjustment of course.

I was thinking about them not doing a full service just for a few seconds off COSC when I typed my post

Thanks folks

As it's running -6 sec or maybe a bit more, think I'll take it in.

Good for you... It's your watch and you need to be happy with it. For some, happiness is perfect accuracy and for others, happiness is simply the fact that the hands have not fallen off!
