Laughable watch brands?

Hi everybody,

New member here, just joined about a month ago to find my wife the perfect rolex for her 30th.

As a result of my many hours on TRF, I am finding myself looking to upgrade my own wrist decor. So I went to the jewelry/watch store today to check out rolex and omega watches for myself. When I showed the lady my current watch, a Tag Heuer, she laughed!

Am I being overly sensitive by getting offended by her chuckle? Is a Tag a laughable watch?

Should I hide my Tag in shame (until I get that Speedmaster I have my eyes on)?

The only thing laughable in this situation is the service provided by your jeweler. Enjoy your Tag, and give your hard earned money to another store.

X2. I have a Tag Heuer, and it's a fine watch. I have many watches (20?) of many price points and ages. I wear them because I like them. What others think is not my concern.
Having said that, there's no excuse for that level of rude service. Go elsewhere for your jewelry needs. The attitude of some luxury sales people is absolutely laughable. It really makes you appreciate the specialty shops who cater to the watch crowd. They get it. It's not about buying the most expensive thing you can afford, it's about enjoying what you get.

Forget what she thinks! Tags are certainly not laughable. I have a 1999 Tag F1 chrono that I love to bits. I've taken that watch off roading in the mountains on atvs and I've taken it hiking. It is a rather tough little watch for what it is. Enjoy your Tag to the fullest!

Certainly a rude response...
I'd just forget about it and move my business elsewhere!

Ahhhh watch snobbery, if you like your Tag wear it, I have had a few and they were great. I say spend your cash in a different store.

What a jerk. I'd go back to the store, try on every watch possible, take pictures, etc... and then kindly inform the saleswoman that you'll be purchasing your watch elsewhere.

Hopefully she laughed at something different than your watch. One could do far worse than a tag. Are they the heuer of old? Not quite. But they have put out a bunch of very respectable watches recently. I'd certainly give my hard earned bit coins to some other retailer

Wow...that's harsh. Both of my local AD's sell Tag and Rolex side by side. Definitely would let the manager know what happened and that you won't be returning.

Considering she's working the sales counter at a jewelry store and couldn't afford a high end Tag (>$60k) with her whole years salary I don't think she's the one who should be laughing.

Never walk into that store again.

That would make me move my business elsewhere in a heartbeat. As far as I'm concerned all watch brands deserve some respect and Tag Heuer is certainly not one that should be snobbed. Some people will just always feel the need to ridicule items they don't consider "luxurious" enough and to them I say just too bad, they're clearly wrong.

Enjoy all the watches you have, that's what a real watches and horology enthusiast does.

Her response says more about her than the watch.

She's there to sell watches. By making you question the status level of your Tag she's attempting to push your competitive buttons and possibly make a sale. Works on some, fails to hit the mark with others.

Exactly playing the status card which will work well on many non WIS buyers as we know. Laughing tho is rather classless and rude, but even in Selfridges I was once wearing a Hublot and the lady at the AP counter saw me trying on a ROO and said time to trade up, altho politely.

I had a brother-in-law who made a very good living even as a fairly young man. Years ago after cleaning his pool on a Sunday he heard the local Porsche dealer had just gotten in a Turbo so he went down in his swim trunks, flip-flops and T-shirt to check it out. It was on the showroom floor but was locked.

A salesman came up to him and he asked him to unlock it so he could get in. The salesman looked at him and said, "I don't know where the keys are, but wouldn't it be nice if you could afford it?"

Just because of that comment and for no other reason he went up to another salesman, wrote the guy a check, and drove home in it. All while the original arse-hole looked on seeing his lost commission drive off the lot.

Great story. These days, it can be a costly mistake to judge someone by their appearance alone.

Yep. Funny thing is he didn't even really like the color. He literally bought the car just to screw with the guy.

She's an idiot. Buy from somewhere else that shows customers a bit more respect.

Ok, so I wasn't crazy. I will definitely never go back there.

This was a shop in westchester, NY, so maybe that explains the attitude. Either way, that wasn't right.

Thanks for you feedback guys!!
