Are two-tones daytonas less popular?

Hi all,

I have an impression that the 116523 two-tones Daytona are less popular than the SS ones. is that true? I kind of like the 116523 YG/SS with white dial.

Are they less popular because they are more difficult to resell? Problem is, I also had a hard time finding a pre-own 116523 with white dial.

Yes. They are generally less popular.

I believe two-tone is simply not as popular as it once was.

However the TT Daytonas have a much broader / more interesting selection of dials Vs. SS where you have...wait for it...Black and White.

It was the first Daytona I ever got. Got it because I liked it not because of what others thought or resale value as should you

Generally the TT goes for the same or often less on the second hand market.

Two Tones are not traded and sought after by the WIS community as much as the Stainless Steel models..

To say that they are less popular may not be correct. Dealer displays usually have many more TT examples of different variations of every model and likely don't make their living by selling the bottom-of-the-line Stainless watches.

Two tones have always reminded me of a gold watch that didn't quite make it all the way.

Personally I would rather have either a stainless steel or full gold but not the TT.

Thanks guys for the inputs so far. This forum is great!

Resell value is kind of important to me, so I will probably go for pre-own if I go for the TT.

I already have a JLC SS Grande Reverso, and a GMT-2 BLNR (Batman), so thought a TT with YG/SS will be something different. The 116523 with White dial caught my eye because it's a white dial which is something I don't have now. But it's very hard to find a pre-own. Full gold on the other hand, is too loud for my taste.

However I also saw the YM with the Platinum/SS review which looks really classy......but I got a feeling pictures doesn't do that watch justice.

Well when Daytona fever first started you could pick up the TT for almost what the SS versions were selling sometimes cheaper. Now god knows why perhaps it was getting the latest in fashion SS Daytona watch that was hard to get at retail, and most of the so called celebs was wearing. Now IMHO the TT was a far better looking watch with more dial options than the SS.But afraid fashion did not dictate to buying the TT as fashion dictated you must get the SS.And today its still the same even some buying the TT at one time and changing them to SS versions its a crazy world, but today fashion dictates most all things.

TTs are the best and cheapest way to get hold of the much prized panda dial.

I haven't seen many Daytona's in the wild. Here in this forum, they seem to be less popular. I only wanted a TT Daytona when looking.

I think the TT Daytona looks great, especially with a blue arabic dial.

Have both the SS and TT. The TT shows a little flashier but is very beautiful! Get what you want the most. Even if you decide to sell, there will always be someone who loves the TT Daytona.

I have a SS Daytona (current series) but also hanker after a 16523 Zenith TT with white dial and black sub dial surrounds (which I believe was later phased out and replaced with Gold surrounds prior to the end of the Zenith production). Have only seen a few of these photographed. When you're buying second-hand, the initial depreciation hit of TT being less popular makes it a more attractive proposition. I know it won't be as popular as a SS but, at the end of the day, it's down to what you want that should really matter.

That's been my observation over the years, too. I've had TT watches in the past and wasn't particularly enamored by them. The bands stretched faster and are frightfully expensive to replace, the watches were heavier, and the gold was more prone to scratches and dings. In addition, yellow and rose gold calls attention to itself and the wearer more than SS, and I would rather keep a lower profile in that regard. When I was in the market for a Daytona I looked no further than SS for the practical aspects and resale potential, as SS seemed to be holding its value better as a percentage of new. The resale potential is important to me, as that's the way I justify my expensive hobby, and all my watches can be flipped at any given time. All that is except my GMT 1675 that I've had for 43 years, the only Rolex I ever bought new. It isn't going anywhere.

OTOH, buying a used TT at a nice low price may be okay from an investment standpoint. The two TTs I've owned in the past were purchased at favorable prices and flipped a few years down the road for more than I paid for them, so my experience in this regard is good. I just feel more financially secure with SS.

I really like the two tone Daytona with the silver dial and gold sub dials. Would I pay the money for one though? No. Would I rather have one of those than my white dial stainless steel Daytona? Definitely not.

I am, however, constantly properly tempted by a two tone Datejust with a silver dial on an Oyster bracelet... Perhaps even a Datejust II.

My opinion is buy what you like and if you buy the two tone watch at the right price you won't get hurt.I like the two tone daytona over the steel daytona.Just try to get the lasted style which has the clasp i am showing you.So go for it and be happy.Heres mine.

The TT Panda is stunning. I personally am "over" TT watches and I elected to get a SS Daytona.

Also, you can walk into any AD and find a TT; can't do the same with the SS.

it's a matter of personal taste. As far as market value is concerned, the Stainless Steel models bring more money.

I agree with Neil, they are a good way to get the Panda dial. I for sure wouldn't turn one away just because it was two tone...on the other hand, I wouldn't want more than one or two in my collection either.
