THE SDDS and the new SD4000 myth....

IMO It's to big, IMO it's like a hockey puck on a strap, IMO it's unsightly, IMO it's all over for the beast, IMO it's ugly, IMO it was a mistake. IMO it will be discontinued........

But in IMO the new SD is merely a tribute act, there can only be one Deepsea watch and this is it.....

Attention all Desk Divers - Dive watches need to be big

A modern day Engineering Marvel - Long live the real Deep sea king

I think all three have their place. The Submariner is good for 1000 feet; the SD is a beefed-up Submariner, good to 4000 feet and with a helium escape valve. The DS is Rolex's most extreme dive watch, good to 12,000 feet. Sure it's larger, but it's also rated to three times the depth of a SD, which is about 360 times greater than the pressure here on earth.

So I think all three have a place in the Rolex lineup, and perhaps in an enthusiast's collection!

cheers,
Mark

I will drink to that, I want to also point out that folks seem to hate on this watch but love the yacht master II. I cannot understand how the look of the printed "Ring Lock System" is more overstated then having "Yachtmaster II" tattooed on the bezel.

IMHO of course

The DSSD, much loved and much hated, will remain the undisputed King of any sport Rolex ever made.

The Deepsea is king period. A big hunk of 904L Stainless badassery, and I love mine to death but I'll be damned if it doesn't feel like I have a mini sumo wrestler on a strap tied to my wrist.

He'll always be there though, lurking in the deepest and darkest depths, the official and new badass, title holder, and Dethrone/Tapout t-shirt wearing wrist humbler.

If I were 6'6" 250 lbs the Deepsea would be on my wrist no question.
As it is I'm not so it isn't

Yes I agree the DSSD has always been over the top as a daily watch.

I will have to see the new SD in person to know for sure but right now it looks to me to be a home run, and one that may have a few Sub C owners trading up.

Thing is I don't hate the new SD and have been lucky enough to own one of the originals. A classic and original world beater but it should have stayed that way, things have evolved and moved on. Keep the classic as just that. Why reinvent the tribute act and devalue the older (albeit over priced) originals? Why try step back in time? Would we run out and buy a car with manual wind windows or put our bathroom in sheds out back in this day and age?

I understand the SDDS isn't for everyone, in as much as the sub isn't for various reasons for me but I just don't get the haters of what is a fantastic watch, a world beater, a champion of dive watches, an engineering marvel....

The rush towards the past seems to have forgotten to ask what was the reason people bought the SD over subs previously ? If it was as I suspect Engineering, technology, world record feats then why look back when their is a new champion. Go buy an original or if it's merely size driven buy a subc...

I totally agree it seems as though every fawning post over the new SD tribute poses the question as to whether the SDDS is dead or an admission of a mistake because of its reintroduction

Different watches simple as.....

I think the DSSD is a cool watch because it's amazingly well constructed and the community of people that can wear it is very exclusive. It only looks good on certain wrists so you don't choose to wear a DSSD, it chooses to wear you. Unfortunately my wrist is too puny so I wasn't chosen

The new SD isn't trying (or claiming) to be the DSSD. It's a different watch.

This, too bad the vast majority of dssds on the net are on owners wrists that think they are pulling it off. Sorry, everyone is being nice either saying nothing or giving a smiley. Unless you are a college or professional athlete out a very large person, you are the only one fooled.

I simply mean that for me and my size at 5'10" 175 my Sub C is about as big of a watch as my wrist can get away with.
I love the look of the Deepsea but on "my" wrist I look like an 8 year old wearing my dads watch.

Little harsh I think.

Personally I hope they discontinue the DSSD so I will own one of the shortest run Rolex dive watches. If I ever add a SD to the collection it will 16600.

I am not calling anyone out and if a small guy or girl wants to spend money and wear any watch however they want but just don't think you are fooling anyone. If that's what you want to do, I'm happy for you seriously, but it either fits or it don't.

Someone in a wis circle likened it to the saggy pants that are 4 sizes too big, I did not agree because saggy pants wearers aren't trying to present the pants as tailor fitted.

The DSSD is a mother of a beast, always will be. Even though it's wayyy to big for my wrist I still bought it twice....because it's such a freak of nature. So deeep. I will get another, to have. Because it's a marvel...bulk aside. The new 116600 though, will be on my wrist a few times a week.

Does anyone know if it has the deepsea's glidelock?

Great technical achievement and, sure, it looks great on some, but for us mere mortals it's comical at best
