Shinola-did not know this

I just read an article aimed at the marketing used by Shinola.

http://four-pins.com/style/shinola-d...-white-knight/

I did not know the company was owned by the same holding company that now owns Filson.

I like some of filson very much but definitely not the entire line.
Waxed cotton handily outperforms my goretex!

Shinola appears to me to be a bit of excess marketing.

Not a huge fan - though I'd like to be given the efforts to put some folks in Michigan to work. I applaud that.

Hard to warm up to quartz tho.

I also can't get that old expression out of my mind..."You don't know sh*t from Shinola."

I, too, was unaware of the many non-Detroit aspects. That said, however, the author seems to be overly peeved about Shinola. I applaud them for their work making jobs in Detroit.

I know some of my hometown headquartered firms don't make everything from scratch here. They use parts or assemblies made elsewhere to produce a finished product here.

I have been to the Shinola store-they are doing something right as many of their watches seem to be sold out-whether it is a short term fad or a long term success remains to be seen...I believe Bedrock manufacturing in Dallas was the original seed money (started from the original owner of Fossil) and Bedrock is known for buying storied brands and pumping up the marketing efforts. Detroit does need this, even if the watches are just "assembled" in Detroit

They also make bicycles. Here is a blurb from their FAQ:

Where are your bikes made?

"Our frames and forks are both fabricated in Waterford, Wisconsin by the legendary Waterford Precision Cycles shop, with complete bike assembly taking place in our Detroit workshop. They are made out of premium American steel tubing and are every bit as good as any full custom bicycle on the market. And while we are committed to supporting US manufacturing and using US-made parts whenever possible, some components cannot be readily made in the US, and for those components we have turned to reliable, international sources capable of producing parts of the highest possible quality."

Does that mean 'made in China'?

I thought the watches were pretty average for the price point and the model names were strange to say the least.

For bikes that means Italy and Japan.

They are quartz, have parts from China and are expensive from that point of view. But put one on your wrist and you will want one. The names are slightly odd, but all in the "theme". I have one of the Limited Editions and will easily get my money back if I ever decide to sell it.

I bought a 41mm black Shinola Runwell today. I am on the road and unable to post a picture. But it's a nice watch and strap for its' price.

I am always wary when a Company calls a product a 'Runwell'.

Especially a watch.

I saw this lifetime guarantee on their website but couldn't find the details.

What does it mean in the States?

Not to my liking for the second time looking at them closely. Don't need another watch of the calibre. FWIW,

The lifetime guaratee means as long as I am alive and Shinola is in business, Shinola will repair a defect in the watch.

They make a wide variety of watches. Easy to find one most people like.

They bought the name - used to make and sell shoe polish; hence the adage or saying referenced above.

Check them out on their website. As a WIS, i find my watch a nice, inexpensive alternative to my "heavy artillery."

Not the biggest fan of Shinola but that was an interesting read. Thanks for posting! Love my Filson bags, I've had a couple for almost 10 years and they're still holding up great.

Shinola is relying on its marketing a bit too much. Yet its heart is in the right place.

As for "made in China"--get used to it. The world is pretty small and no matter where you look, you will find materials that are sourced from Asia, Africa and other places many won't be able to put on the map.

I know it's an old thread, but I just purchased on. Seems I see a lot of post by non-owners.

The movements are Ronda Swiss movements. I believe the only parts from China are the sapphire crystals and SS case. I bought into their marketing and purchased a Runwell 47mm. Apparently I don't know sh!t from Shinola.

I think they have been trying to keep the Filson thing under wraps. Last I heard they only had two watchmakers on staff.

I saw their watches last weekend in Nordstrom Rack which is a last year's stock discount kind of place. I was surprised to see Shinola in there already.

This is a revealing article on them from last year:

I read that article last night. If I read the article prior to seeing the watch, not sure if I would have picked it up for $550. I am happy with it though. Sapphire Crystal, Horween strap, superluminova, signed crown and buckle, cool wooden box with card and leather balm for strap. Nice package.

The business assessment of Shinola seems to be pretty accurate. They're kind of the American version of Bremont.

The social analysis is total BS. If nothing else, Shinola is at least adding to the Detroit tax base and employing people.

The author objects to the fact that there are white people involved in the supply chain and marketing of the product, not to mention Asians.
"To demonstrate just how optimistic and amazing Detroiters are, Shinola enlisted Bruce Weber and Carolyn Murphy—both out of towners, both white—to shoot the company’s latest ad campaign."
Ad copy compliments Detroit citizens and the author turns that into some kind of snide remark.
"Even their social media campaign are insulting:
'For every #SayNiceThings post on social media, we will write those intentions on paper embedded with seeds. The seed paper will later be planted throughout Detroit, specifically for use in the beautification of a dog park near our Detroit store.'"
"'People were really friendly. They looked you in the eye when they said hello on the street, and they greeted you with a smile.' Detroit may be bankrupt, but that doesn't mean its citizens aren't normal, functioning human beings...."
The formula used to write this article is quite familiar to me, as well as its political motivation. I could go on, but there's no need.
