Defective Dial or My Mind Saying "You're a psycho"
Hello guys,
Could anyone look at the pics (or check their own black subs) to see whether or not I have a defective dial or not. When I look at my watch with the sun out, it seems as though I have these waves/crease marks right on the middle of the dial (where the second/minute/hour hands all meet). Im trying to figure out if its attributed to the reflective of the hands and its just bouncing back a reflective circle or if I do somehow have a defective, creased dial. http://i59.tinypic.com/24dqvyq.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/6za97m.jpg http://i57.tinypic.com/bilb15.jpg Good Morning and good afternoon! |

Your pictures are huge and not needed that size what you are seeing is like if you put a straw in water its seems to bend with the slight indentation where the hand stack is .

Can't see what you're seeing due to blurry pics...
Using a loupe will tell you more. Also a visit to the AD could help. But louping can lead to all sorts of OCD - best to enjoy it!

Once I submitted them, I realized how large they were. I went back and removed the [/img] portions just to make them links but I guess it didn't save. |

I can't see what you're seeing since it's so blurry. I think Peter nailed it though. Normal to me...

100% percent normal. The dial is metal and the center hole is "punched" out causing what you are seeing. Mine is the same, no worries.
Somewhere there's a thread floating around about this but I couldn't find it. If you look at pretty much any SD pic you'll see the exact thing at the date opening.

It's best not looking at your watch through a loupe. If you do you will see many small gremlin-like creatures running around inside your watch. I quit because it was giving me nightmares.

Its intentional.
lol, the center hole is not punched, that process is far too inaccurate considering the tolerances we're dealing with here. its to give the dial a 3d effect, anyone can drill the hole afterwards but it takes much more effort to ensure the finish is consistent - you will notice the change in depth is concentric so its definitely not an accident. |

Completely normal, and another interesting distinction to note is that the "dimple" is only found on gloss Rolex dials, but not the matte or Sunburst dials.
My 16613 and 116610LV (both Sunburst dials) do NOT have it, my EXPII42 and my DSSDs did NOT have it, but my 116619LB and my 16600, and all of the gloss dials I have owned do have this dimple to some extent. I refer to it as the "waterfall effect" because I think it is created when the gloss lacquer is applied and it flows through the center hole. (It can also sometimes be seen around the perimeter of the dial and around the date aperture as well).

I wondered about that too but I looked it up and there were a few threads on it.
It's normal, and you'll find them in the centre of the dial, the outer edge of the dial, and also possibly around the date window where applicable. |

Its good to know im not going crazy.
So its safe to say that all subs have this dimple effect? Only reason why I ask for the affirmation is because I think I read someone say that some rolex have it while others don't. Can't tell whether or not he means some rolex models (differing models) or some rolex of the same model don't have it (as in, its not consistent). |

I think that what you're going to find is that most if not all gloss black dialed Subs have it.

All Subs with a gloss black dial have it. The same press and the same process cuts the dials so there would not be any difference.

Not just black, all gloss dials. The green gloss dial from the YG 116718 GMTII, as well as the blue gloss dial on my WG 116619 Sub also have it.
