My wife offered to buy me a new watch for my combined Birthday/Father's Day present (both the same week). I decided to swap my relatively new 116000 orange and black dial for something new. My initial idea was to get an EXP 1 in 39mm but the day it was to be shipped I had a change of heart and opted for an 114060 even though I already have a 14060 which I like a lot and wear a lot.
I'm curious as to what you would have done; which would you have chosen? BTW, the Sub is in house and is getting sized today. |

Except maybe three of a kind. I like the 14060 so much; the new one is massive in comparison. |

That's a tough choice for me because I really love both watches. I would go with the 114060 first and then the 214270. Have you thought about selling your 14060M for the 214270? That's what I would do.
A 114060 and 214270 would make a killer combo. |

That would be a tough choice for me to decide on...since I like both watches and would love to eventually own both of them. If I did not already own a 14060M, I would get one of them now and then save up for the other one...but now of course the Explorer I.....

I want a 114060 to go with my Explorer. I think that would be a great combo, also.

Now that the Explorer is 39mm, there isn't a lot of significant differences between the Explorer and the 14060 and the 114060, except for the bezels, at least for those who don't dive. So, if you're conflicted between a 214270 and any Sub, the bezels should be the deciding factors, when you consider how useful they are, or at least how useful they are to me.
I'm not too sure that I'd need two Rolex divers, but I will say that I think that my 114270 and my 14060M make a dynamic duo.

On this site, a statistically insignificant slice of unreality, a lot say go for the Sub, one of which you already have. In the real world, people would look at you with a deeply quizzical expression and say "huh, are you serious?"
Looks like you made your choice, hope you enjoy enjoy them both.

She said it was beautiful and asked how much it cost. I said, "A little less that $10,000." Her jaw fell open and she said, "Why would you pay that kind of money for a watch." I said, "Because that's how much it cost." They just don't understand.

Both watches are really nice. Can't go wrong with either.
I went into an AD a while back to try on the 114060 -- love the clean dial and overall iconic design. Then I tried on the 214270, which seemed elegant and understated, but a little less interesting to my eye. Even though I prefer the Sub in many ways, the Explorer looked better on my wrist -- I couldn't deny it and various sales staff agreed. Why? Because my wrist is on the small side at 6.75". So my advice would probably be that if you like both watches equally, go with the Sub if your wrist is 7" or larger and the Explorer if it's under 7". Sometimes there can be tension between what we like best (the intrinsic qualities of the watch itself) and what looks best on our wrist. Tough to advise when these two things aren't in sync. This is probably why I have yet to buy either watch, as much as I like both ;-) John |

What truly amazes me is the difference between the two watches. Since I do a lot of water activities including swimming three to five miles a week, I typically like a watch that has a bezel that I can use to watch my time and one that also has good water resistance. Call it engineering margin. At any rate here are the two subs (no dates) side by side.

Explorer I- I love it. For me, I wouldn't want to own several models of one model.
But congrats on the new watch and happy b-day/father's day! |

I would have gone Sub, but a date version, probably the 16610 to match the 14060. Either that, or a 36mm Explorer.
