Hey Everybody,

This time I am in search of a submariner which will team up with my 1675 for daily wear. I have been checking out some varieties of 5513, 1680 and 16800 and i feel close to 16800 transitional so far which is between vintage and modern. I might even be able to take it for a swim after getting done the under pressure test. What do you think about this 16800 that i come across, and two others (1680), plus (5513) just alternatives to 16800. What i would like to have is a nicely faded insert and a good example of alikes. Here they are, I appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Ref.16800/1982

I really like the insert on 16800 and the nice patina on the lumes. I have a doubt about the crown guards tough, do they look a little weak or it may just be the light.

I also liked the 1680. It has a nice almost ghost insert and bright lumes.

I'm a bit biased I guess, since I wear a 16800, but that's what I'd probably pick again. That is, unless it was a secondary watch, then I'd probably want a more rare vintage piece. I love the IDEA of an older, plexi-clad Sub, but, in practice, I really prefer the sapphire.

16800 if you want to shower and swim with it - and youre right, the crown guards are a little thin - but the rest of the 16800 is beautiful.

I see no reason why a 16800 is better to swim with than a 1680 or other sub. Looks nice. get the one you prefer - good luck!

I guess i like the look of the plexi a little more but just this 16800 seems to have very nice tone to it incase of patina on insert and lumes.

Wouldn't be the sapphire crystal more waterproof compare to the plexi glass?
And do you think the case looks ok both in 16800 and 1680?

The sapphire won't degrade over time, or, not nearly as much as a plexi. The degradation of plexi can decrease water resistance. On a sapphire crystal watch, really only need to worry about the seals/gaskets being in working condition with regard to water resistance.

I'd probably want to see more pictures of both cases to get a better feel. The 1680 lugs look a bit thin, but the end links look like they fit snugly, so, I could be wrong.

I think the 16800 is a fabulous watch and grossly under appreciated…

After having owned both the Matte Dial 16800 and the 1680 I must admit I prefer the 16800…

I have found, over the years, that a Matte Dial seems to look "Nicer" when viewed through a Sapphire crystal…I'm sure there are many who would disagree, but if you compare the two side by side, I think you'll see what I mean…

This is of course only one mans opinion…

The 5513 is a separate animal… And a wonderful watch…

Regarding the 16800 you have there, I have never seen one with a "Silver" Date Wheel…???

These are usually, as with the 16660, an "Off White"…???

No biggie, just thought I would mention it…Great looking watch though...

I'm not necessarily saying it's wrong…For all I know there were a few 16800's that came with a Silver Date Wheel…???

But in my experience, the Date Wheels were all an Off White Color, not silver…

But there are certainly many people here who know much more then I do, maybe someone else will chime in…?!?!?!

i have a 16800 and im going to vote for it. regarding the crown guards....the 16800 does have thinner guards than a 1680. that being said, the lugs in your watch look slightly polished but nothing egregious. go for the 16800. they were only made for a short time and many had the matte dial swapped out for a WG dial during service. the patina on yours will mean it is always in demand. here is mine:

And yours is lovely. Almost very similiar with the one i am interested. Which year is yours? The ''0'' at the bottom of the coronet looks slightly more open in yours, or maybe its just my eyes seeing wrong. Are there different Markings in dials of 16800 such as the 1675?

mine is an '82.

these are the bargain of the century. if another comes up with amazing patina and the right price i may buy another. they werent made for that long at all, are a true transitional, and develop a really unique patina that other other Subs dont. My bezel is a deep blue and changes color in different lighting. My pearl is a burnt orange and gorgeous.

there is a beauty up for sale on VRF like mine but it is big bucks. mine has papers (but no tag) is very very slightly polished and I waid way less than he is asking. but, if i were buying one, id buy this one:

The asking price on that is insane. I might be wrong, but I think that may have last been purchased from Ben (nbTimes). Looks really familiar.
