New Look For An Old Friend

I've had this 1st generation Seiko Monster for about eight years. It's always reliable, never let me down. I've worn it on all different kinds of bracelet/ strap combos. It just hasn't gotten much love lately since I acquired the newer version of it.

I stumbled on the world of modding your Seiko. It's a whole different world. It's almost like a subculture It's different because it's actually acceptable to do. The possibilities are endless...dials, hands crystals, you can even mix and match hands and buy them separately.

I ordered a crystal and set of plongeur hands for it initially. When they came in, they didn't float my boat. It was back to looking around. I asked our own Dan "The Man" Pierce a bunch of questions because he's done a bunch of mods himself. Also Robb was a big help.

Finally I found what I wanted. Something totally different and a great look for the summer. This is the last pic of the watch the way it was born.

I ordered the parts and sent the watch off to the mod shop. I was real excited going forward with the work. The watch came back to me this past Saturday. When you mod a Seiko, you even get your parts back

Let me say that I'm not one to name my watches, but this one is an exception. I changed the dial, handset, day/date wheel and put a domed AR crystal on it. This one had heavy cosmetic surgery...a complete face lift. Due to that...ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...Joan Rivers

With it's younger brother, which I also changed the crystal on.

Thanks for reading everyone

Hi Paulie,

Nice work on the monster.

Bought my son one for work - perfect for the job and I also have one for the rough stuff.

They sure take a beating.

The parts to modify are not easy to get in Oz. Might have to look on da Bay.

Thanks Eddie You really can't beat them. The newer versions have hacking, hand wind movements.

Here's the guy I used. He shipped to me from Japan. First time I ordered the parts they took six weeks. When I ordered these parts I paid $20 for expedited shipping and had them in six days

Don't compare that to Joan Rivers, as that "surgury" actually looks "normal" and good!

I'll second this. It does the watch a disservice!

Nice Mod Paulie, love it!

Curious to hear if the lume is comparable or better on the modded dial?

Absolutely fantastic

I have 2 mod'd Seiko Divers but no Monster. I bought a Monster for one of my employees who wears it daily. Every time I see him I find myself staring at it and wondering why I don't have one. This didn't help.

Thanks Rob The lume on the hands is the same as the original ones, but on the dial it isn't as bright. It's definitely legible. Being out in the sun all day, the dial will still have some glow in the morning but very faint. On the other hand, when I wear my 2nd Gen Monster to work It will glow strong for two nights
