Some Basic New Guy Questions...

Ok, it seems to me that Rolex models come in two different sizes, a full size and a mid size.

I had "thought" Presidentials were the big ones and all others were mid size, but looking around it seems tha I am in error. I like the look and heft of the full size watches.

Are all models available in a full size and mid size? I saw what looked like a mid size Presidential (day, date, non jubilee bracelet).

Are Submariners and GMTs full size only, or are they also available as a mid size?

I'm also liking the look of the Gold/SS datejust, are they available in a full size?

Rolex watches come in various sizes:

• Ladies Rolex watches: 26 mm
• Mid-sized ("uni-sex") - 31 mm + Date and Air-King Rolex watches - 34 mm.
• Standard men's Rolex sizes (for instance Datejust and Day-Date): 36 mm. And exception: the new Milgauss NON sport's Rolex watch with a 40 mm case. (at least the MG is not specified as a "sport's" Rolex in the catalogue)
• Sport's Rolex watches: 40 mm, except the Explorer 114270 (36 mm) and Yacht-master II (44 mm).

Hi and welcome to TRF.

The President comes in full size 36 mm, mid-size 31 mm as well as the ladies 26 mm.

Sports models all come in the 40 mm....exceptions being....

YM - 40 mm, mid-size 35 mm and ladies 29 mm.

YM-II - only 43 mm.

DJs only come in 36 mm and ladies 26 mm.

DATE model and Air-King 34 mm.

Pearlmaster men's 39 mm.

If I've missed out anything else, the others can chime in.

Bo, your post prompts a question. With the move toward bigger watches, do you think the 31mm watches are uni-sex any longer? Seems to me even the 35mm is an ideal size for a women in a YM for example. Especially if she's not quite ready to go 40mm. Can't see a man buying a 31 /35 mm watch any longer.

I've always considered the 31 mm as the "neither here nor there" size!!

Always wondered why they make it.....until my first visit to Hong Kong in 1994.....where I found almost every Tom, Dick, Harry and Chinese wearing one!!! Very popular in the Far East where the guys have small boned structures.

So the GMT and Subs are actually bigger than the Presidentials.

Most certainly are - all GMTs and Subs are 40 mm.....while all Prezzies are 36 mm.

Case diameter same - 40 mm. Dial, however, is 29 mm as opposed to the 30 mm dials of the Subs and GMTs.

The 31 mm watches would STILL be a good choice for those persons having small/skinny wrists. The trend "bigger is better" would not change that, imho.

Some years ago, the standard DJ size (36 mm) was the NORMAL watch size and the sport's Rolex watches at 40 mm were considered quite big, only intended for - yes you guessed it! - sport's and/or professional use. These days, 40 mm watches seem to be "standard size"...

What size of watch that looks good on what size of wrist is a matter of personal taste and preference. Personally, I really like the DJ (and even the sport's Rolex 40 mm) size on female wrists, be they skinny or large.

Clearly these various case size options are a diabolical plot by Rolex to force me to own several variants.

Be aware however the watch may appear larger as a result of the attached bezel, when in fact a watch like the Exp has the same size dial as the larger Sports but no bezel.

Besides all of the great info supplied above, the term "president", when applied to a Rolex, specifically refers to the bracelet model associated with the Day-Date watch. However, the watch itself has become synonymous with the bracelet, hence the term president now referring to the watch itself. Except of course to those of us anal enough to correct people for the slight, inconsequential faux pas.
