Going gold: Do I go for White or Yellow for my first PM watch?
What's up TRF, need your advice and input again :)
I'm going to trade my silver stick 116300 DJ2 in for a slightly used WG or YG DD 36mm. Going to either get a 118239 or 118238, both will have the modern clasp and engraved Rehaut. The YG DD has the champagne stick dial and champagne colored date and day wheels, the WG DD has the silver stick dial. Prices are comparable and don't make me favor one or the other. Here's the dilemma: I'm really stuck evenly between the two, and I know Mike is going to come in here and say get both but that's not going to happen!! :) I love the WG DD because I really have enjoyed my dj2 which is very similar to what I'm getting in terms of looks, the DD will just be heavier, smaller, with a fluted bezel and awesome president bracelet. It's more understated which I like as I'm 24 years old. I might be more comfortable wearing it out/less aware of it on my wrist if that makes sense. It's a Z serial, and it has the one dial I would want on it. On the other hand, I love the YG DD because it is in my opinion the quintessential precious metal Rolex, and if I'm spending all this money for my first precious metal Rolex, I feel like I should go for the bold yellow gold. Not to show off to other people necessarily, but for my own validation when I might look at my WG DD and say it's too similar to my DJ2.. So why did I spend 10k more?? The YG DD also has the dial configuration I would want in champagne stick. The DD I get is going to be for weekend wear and going out regardless of whether it's YG or WG so I feel like if that's what I'm going to wear it for, I should go YG. The YG is also newer, a V serial. After typing all this out, I'm weighing in favor of WG 51% to YG 49% just because it's a bit more under the radar and since I'm younger it might be better for my demographic. I might be more comfortable wearing the WG DD which is important to me. I also really really liked my DJ2, more than other SS models I've flipped (SubC, GMT2c, Daytona), but on the other hand I don't really mind if I go with the YG flashy route since I won't be wearing it to work and I've worked very hard and saved a lot to get this watch. I can't keep the dj2 or flip another watch to get these DayDates either. I'm not sure which one will hold it's value more or be easier to resell down the road if I need to cross that bridge. The YG seems special and has something unique to it which is important given the amount of money I'm spending, more so than the WG version, but I might be more comfortable with the WG. Help me out here with your experience and opinions!! Thanks as always - Sammy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sammy - I think that you framed the pros and cons of YG vs WG very well in your post. I would chose WG for the very same "under the radar" reasons that you describe, but in the end it depends upon your personal situation, lifestyle, crowd, etc. I do think that being younger weighs in favor of the WG, all other things being equal.
Tom - stunning DD. |

It would be white gold for me, however I don't think you can go wrong as both are beautiful.

I'd say get the YG, only because you are giving intellectual reasons for choosing the WG piece (more under the radar, appropriate to my age), but you consider the YG DD to be "the quintessential precious metal Rolex" and "it seems special and has something unique to it".
Sounds like a grail to me. Plus, you say the WG piece is very similar to your DJ, and you are willing to trade that away. But really, I'd hold off until your mind settles on one or the other. For this kind of money, why be half committed and unsure of your choice?

On your choices, I would go with YG DD as it's the classic Rolex gold watch. Good luck!

I would just think a bit ahead to your next gold watch, as you know staying too long on here anything can happen. If that might be a sports watch, sub or GMT, would that be in WG or YG. Or would it be an SS piece. I would then think about the perfect pairing for you and buy accordingly.

Thanks for all the input everyone, it's appreciated. I'm going to head to my AD after work and try on both to see which one really sings to me and which one I feel I will really enjoy and wear all the time when I can to get my full moneys worth, but keep the input and opinions coming!

I think for your first precious metal YG is the way to go. You know it everybody knows it that's why you bought it
When second and third you can look into the subtle nuisances of WG and platinum, but that is for down the road, my two cents |

Yellow Gold.
I don't consider WG to be GOLD. Why buy GOLD if you are bashful of what it is? GOLD is GOLD. |

I dissent: Go for WG.
Yellow gold is simply too catchy. White gold allows you to fly under the radar as only a few folks will be able to differentiate it from stainless steel. If you're young, a sleeper watch will definitely play out well. |

I love the warm look of my YG Day Date; and in Hawaii, it looks even better!
When I was accustomed to wearing SS watches, YG at first looked out of place on my arm, even as I admired YG watches on others. After one day of wearing YG, however, it just looked normal to me. YG! |

I like yellow because it looks like GOLD. WG doesn't look like gold. IMO, so no flames from the under the radar crowd. Just an opinion. If I don't want the look of gold, I'd go with SS.
Naturally, I would keep a WG watch if it were given to me, and it might even grow on me, but would not be my first choice. |

I'm 29 y/o and for that reason would go with WG... I feel it would fly under the radar more, and I'm just not big on the attention that I feel YG would attract...

Being in the position to do both, I would approach this from the esthetic angle. What suits you more, blond or darker skin color can usually get away with YG without looking too gauche or "Wolf of Wallstreet". The WG version is as mentioned a bit more undercover and works better with lighter, less tan skin or whatever other jewelry works with your appearance. I personally prefer the WG or Plat version of many Rolexes if I'm not looking at SS tool watches. The again, I have a sweet spot for the YG Daytona, especially on blond and tan skin...

I think the YG Day Date is one of the iconic Rolex models and I prefer it to the WG Day Date. I'm not sure I understand the concept that it's best to buy a gold watch that looks like a stainless steel watch. But, of course, you should buy what you believe will please you most.
