Personal Article Policy/Jewelry Insurance: State Farm or Jewelers Mutual?

Hey TRF

I know a lot of TRFers use Jewelers Mutual, but I was just wondering if anyone here has had experience with both State Farm and Jewelers Mutual, or good/bad experiences with either?

Getting jewelry insurance is something that I have put off but now will get asap as my grail piece is coming, and my fiancé has a high value engagement ring/wedding band incoming.

I'm looking to get about $55k in coverage and State Farm quoted me at roughly $850/yr I believe and Jewelers Mutual was about $650/yr.

Reading online, I've read that State Farm can be fussy with replacement in that they pick the replacement and replacement jeweler for you? But Jeweler's Mutual doesn't do that, but either replaces the watch/jewelry at your jeweler of choice or cuts you a check, whichever is less?

Any opinions/input is greatly appreciated I'm very new to this jewelry insurance as I've only dealt with car/health/renter's insurance.

Thanks as always - Sammy

I have Jewelers Mutual. I pay about $1800 a year for $110k in coverage. So it actually sounds like I'm paying a lot from what you're saying others have been quoted. State Farm quoted a little less and ONLY if I added them as my homeowner's insurance in addition.

I trust a more specialized jewelers insurance, people that are dedicated to doing this day in and day out, than a company who really has know idea what it is they're insuring much of the time when it comes to jewelry, hence the fussiness. My neighbor is a big whig for State Farm and admitted the same to me.

Our cars and home are insured through State Farm, which is why it made sense to add our jewelry to a personal articles policy. No complaints from me, and the peace of mind is worth paying a bit of premium for.

I have about $45K if coverage with JM and I pay a little less than $700/yr. Sounds like you're getting a pretty good deal.

I can't speak to which is better, but my jeweler and extremely close friend advised me that JM is the one to be insured by.

I have $34.5k in coverage with SF for $300/year. In one of the more historically dangerous states, too!

I've had a claim with SF for a stolen watch. Replaced with a BNIB from a local AD in about a week. For me the value is good and I get to deal with someone local.

I have a rider with Erie, and I have more coverage than that at well less than half the premium. Now I don't feel so bad about paying that bill.

Thanks for all your input. Still deciding between SF and JM, as far as deductibles go, do you guys all elect for $0 deductible or....? Choosing between 0 and 1000 for deductibles on JM per item can save/add roughly $200 to the policy premium.

State Farm has been awesome for all our needs.
