Shopping day-dates: strong opinions of WG vs Plat, 36 vs 41?
Good day, All.
I'm looking to catch the big fish Rolex and can use your advice. Already enjoying Daytona WG with Meteorite, Pepsi, SeaDweller 4000, DSSD, Patek Aquanaut, SeaMaster 2500 and 9300, JLC Master Calendar, IWC Aquatimer. What direction would you go with the DD? White gold vs platinum?? 36 mm vs 41 mm?? Thanks very much for any/all advice! |

DDII Plat with ice blue dial is a beauty if you are looking for something in that price range.

WG or Platinum depending of the amount of $$$ you have available. But in both cases I would definitely go for the 36mm. |

I would say Platty DD (36mm). I much prefer smooth bezel to fluted bezel in white. I also feel (considering your collection) that the DD is a dress watch and should not be 41mm.
However, when I think of DD, I think 36mm yellow gold and uncommon textures or dials (which usually takes me to vintage). Think Tiger Eye or Burlwood or Malachite dials, bark finish, etc. The DD is the watch of my 70 year old father, and to me the style of a DD should reflect a different style and time. Just for kicks! |

try them all on in person several times and only then make your decision. 41 presents much larger and has a different spirit than the 36.

41 in PT or WG up to you
I personally dont like the dials on the PT nothing intrigues me much, the WG line has 1 that i like, But I ended up going RG and YG to each to his own i suppose |

Size depends on your wrist size. Opinions will vary but I would say if your wrist is 7.5 inch or smaller, 36. If it is closer to 8" or larger, go for the 41". Just a rough guide. Really you should try both on, and also get the opinion of your wife or another trusted person.

The 118206 with ice blue stick dial is the "king" of the day dates in my opinion. Sure it's the smaller 36mm but the classic size works best for this model.

Pt for sure, the 41 is modern but the 36 is much more elegant imo.
Nice choice you have looking forward to Enjoy your search, you can't really go wrong with the options you have. |

DDII Ice Blue/Romans captured me after the first time I tried one on.
Still working it's magic to this day. Small wrists here (6.75") but the 36mm didn't move me the way the 41mm does. I wish I had the same feeling for the 36mm as it would have saved me about $20K It's awesome even in a hotel bathrobe. |

This ... I if I had a budget for a platinum, then why would I go for white gold? Also the 41 MM... its a newer model .. I always go for a newer version of the watch, but thats just my preference. It also depends on your wrist size. For me the DD is just way to small

try on the plats and decide on size for yourself when you feel them on your wrist, personally 36mm has better proportions imho

I like the 41mm size better, but that's me. As for the metal, they're both amazing. I saw a blue wave WG at an AD last month and was blown away.

Plat 41mm for sure. If you're gonna rock some bling, rock it with wrist presence....as long as your wrist is above 6.75inches

Totally agree, WG and Platty are for the wearer, tasteful in that regard. Ultimately, your funds will determine what you get. Either way, 36mm is the preferred size for me.

If your wrist can accommodate the size, I'd go 41mm in platinum.

platinum is prone to galling
I would go for white gold as it is the only metal that is less likely to gall.
Platinum on the other hand is famous for galling and if it does then you are up for the tens of thousands for a new case. My ideal watch would be one with a platinum mid case and a white gold case back, then there is 100 per cent chance of it not galling. Better still is that the case back is less lilkely to strip the threads of the midcase. Platinum is harder to work with in the event that metal repair is required as opposed to gold. 36mm vs 41mm is a personal choice, If you have very small wrists then 36mm would be more appealing. For me anything near 40mm should truly have a rotating bezel of some kind to give it that sport look as most watches of that size are known for. The DD is somewhere between a tool watch and a dress watch and is commonly known to the world as a 36mm timepiece. In this case it is your choice as it is your money and it is suppose to make you happy!!! Good luck and enjoy your purchase in good health. |
