Plotting The Next Watch Attack
So I had a chat with myself about watches. Everybody does that, right?
I have two Rolexes, and wear only one. I came to a realization: I won't wear my Explorer II anywhere that I would not wear my Daytona. So despite all of the excuses I have made for how perfect the Explorer II is (it really is a fantastic watch), I have decided to part with it. And since the only Rolex I envision wearing every day is a Daytona, I have decided not to add another Rolex. But the draw of the hunt is too great. This can only mean one thing: upgrade! During my chat with myself, I also realized asking for your valued opinions will only go so far. I must decide for myself which model to get. However, I think a white gold Daytona is in the top of the running. Panda? Black? Slate? I'm not fond of yellow gold at the moment, and as beautiful as Everose is, it washes out with my skin tone. The other contender is a Patek Philippe Aquanaut, but I haven't tried one on yet. A Nautilis may be another choice. I owned one and was terrified of scratches. I'm not mesmerized by the "magical" blue dial like most. I have tried on the white dial Nautilus, and found it to be only slightly less hideous in person (the fact there are plenty available in white may suggest others agree). With a budget around $20-$25k, there aren't many others I'd consider (no other Rolex, no AP/VC/JLC/IWC/ALS). I might distract myself with another Patek (Calatrava? Gondolo?). Comments are welcome, even "save up for a (Platona/rose gold Aquanaut-slash-Nautilus)" or the ever-witty "first world problem..." :) |

Agree with Tom's meteorite recommendation. I love it on my WG Day-Date.

WG with the red highlighted racing dial dial. Or, an AP15202 is stunning and a good alternative to the PP5711.

WG Daytona sounds ideal for you. I would get the panda dial and source the slate as well so you have two watches in one.

My 2 cents: visit a Rolex boutique and try them all. You will know which one is 'next'

The white dialed 5711 is hideous? good luck with your search, it's half the fun!

I would suggest an AP RO - any reason why you've ruled that out?
Otherwise, the Patek RG aquanaut seems to be "enabled" all the time - that's the one I think?

I agree AP definitely needs to upgrade their RoC movement, but the 15202 or 153/400 is one to consider as well. I'm considering a similar direction for the next watch - either a precious metal Rolex or Aquanaut but starting to consider a RG 15300 and/or 15202 as well so wanting to get views on that front.

Well, hideous is harsh, sorry. I loved the Nautilus I had, which everyone else seems to hate: the 3710 Jumbo "Comet." Matte black dial, white gold/lumed Roman markers, and the baddest (if completely useless) power reserve indicator. To me, the white dial is not attractive, in pictures or in person. |

I have always liked the Aquanaut, if a sports watch is the style you seek. There is also the JLC Reverso, my aspirational piece.

Come on. Where are the AP RO enablers:)?
I'll start. But the Patek or a precious metal Daytona is amazing as well

Go with an aquanaut if you're not a big nautilus fan

I think I scratched it by just looking at it! ;) Scratch-magnet tendencies aside (and PP Aquanaut/Nautilus are equally guilty), it is a handsome watch and a perfect size. I'm sure my F. Piguet 1185-based Omega was the exception, but it failed twice under warranty and once on my dime. I won't give it any more chances than the three I already gave it. |
