good combination to hand down?

hi guys,

quite new to the forum just after some opinions, basically i bought a daytona white dial(116520) last year i where going to buy it many years ago but i chickened out(cost)since then me and my partner have had 2 boys then one day i got my mojo for my grail watch the daytona again with the view to handing it down to boys(main reason of buying it)then i thought about my other watch i own datejust (16200) in steel, then suddenly thought about the watch combo daytona+datejust and when the time comes to hand them down...would both of them be happy??...anyway a couple of months ago i was at my nearest AD and the subc nd (114060)was singing to me i tried it on and after months of slagging off the new style subs i have to admit i fell in love i had a coffee next door to think about pulling the trigger the nd was singing to me because of no date,no cyclops(i was falling out of love with the cyclops etc)yes i know the sea dweller is available but it was out of my reach...i finally pulled the trigger but i traded the datejust towards it and the sub looks beautiful...so the question is has the scales been balanced?or i am looking for a excuse to buy the sea dweller?ha......sorry for the long post.thanks.

I think you have a great pair, and I'll be doing the same soon.

Keep what you have.

If they see what the watches mean to you, I am sure they will fell blessed to have either passed down to them. If you are worried about the difference then you can always buy the other dial version of the Daytona so you can give one the white and one the black.

Two great watches - both should last a long time.

I often wonder if my 3 year old boy will care about watches when he is responsible enough to care for a nice time piece in say...18 years.

Hopefully an automatic watch will still be a relevant thing to wear for practical and fashion reasons.

Life throws so many twists and turns at us that it baffles me when people buy watches with the intention of handing them down. We don't even know if our kids will like watches or even wear them in the future.

I understand that it is a way justifying purchasing an expensive timepiece, but let's all be honest and know that deep down we are buying these things for ourselves to enjoy.

2 fantastic watches and either would love to receive any of them. It won't matter because they will know what they meant to you. Just wear them in rotation so that they are both remembered as being you cherished watches. Once that is the case, it won't matter

They will know that the watch was yours and will love it regardless. It is more about the sentiment. Anything I would receive from my dad would be priceless so to me it wouldn't matter.

Well, to answer your question: is this a good combination to hand down? Yes, certainly. Couldn't do much better.

But one consideration...the Daytona is probably going to be worth a little more come inheritance time. Is one son going to feel resentful? You might think about balancing the scales with future purchases...i.e. make two more purchases, one in the Daytona money range and the other in the sub range...then each can have a monetarily equal inheritance.

You don't want to play favorites. It sounds to me like you need two Daytona watches. One in black and one in white.

If you are interested in leaving watches to them you better indoctrinate them asap or they will be lost to the smart robot butler watch's latest and greatest.

No offense, but to me it looks like you just want a couple of excuses to buy some new Rolex. Which is okay, just don't try to find excuses ;) I don't plan to hand my watches down to my kids, IMHO they should try and earn the necessary funds to buy themselves. It's more rewarding IMHO, and definitely makes them look after the watch more than when receiving it as a gift or heirloom. Just my $0.02.

Most of us make plans and set goals knowing full well that we may die before the day is done.

There's no reason to question the motives of others.

Some things are better taken at face value.

That is a novel approach. Instead of bequeathing one's assets to one's survivors, just sell them to the family member with the highest bid.

Let the model watch go to each son whose personality matches that model.
It's a great gesture that I have thought about with my 3 children.
