Yachtmaster, about to buy one, need some advice

Hi all, I've been in the market for a Rolex since looking in the store in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Particularly a Sub b/c of demand and resale value (hey I'm still young, this is a big investment for me, and if I ever lose my job, I might need to sell)

I found a 3yr old pre-owned Yachtmaster mid for a great price (under 5k USD) and I'm pretty sure I'm taking the plunge but I need some reassurance this is the right move.

I've read alot on the forum. A little concern is that, the YM does not seem to be very popular. Why are they so much more than Subs? As much info to help me decide is much appreciated. I'm sorry for my indecisiveness but this is a big move for me. Thanks everyone in advance and maybe I'll be part of the club soon!

The yachtmaster might not seem to be popular but it's made from more exclusive materials than the sub and that's why even as a second hand watch it's more expensive than the sub. IMO i believe that the yachtmaster is more valuable compared to the sub

I have owned the TT sub blue dial and recently bought a TT yacht-master, white dial. I loved the sub but I am crazy about the Yacht-master, you don't see many of them around which had an appeal for me also it is a newer model which I liked. I think if you try and filter out other distractions, what other people think etc. then put them both on your wrist you will know which one is for you. Its not one of those Granada, Mercedes kind of comparisons ( you are to young to get that I'm sure) In the end either watch is a great choice!

you can get a fairly new pre-owned yachtmaster (full-size..i totally recommend the full size version) for about $5k...

Personally, I like the YM since it has solid centre links which gives the bracelet a more "exclusive" touch, but also has the OLD style clasp which I personally like better than the new ones.

The fact that not only the bezel but also the DIAL is made of PL 950 makes this watch something out of the ordinary, as well.

I had that kind of dilemma before. I believe I even started a thread way back in which to choose. Personally I like the YM a lot especially this one (shown below courtesy of eBay seller: mvpwatchco) but I found that the GMT-IIC has more of a "use" to me compared with the YM. Though if and only if granted right now that I have the money, i'll take the one below no questions asked on this very moment. Can't go wrong with a YM

TT YM with BMOP Dial, can't go wrong with this.

The Yacht Master is THE BEST watch I have ever owned & I am on my third!!

It's slim, has a clear, legible face & a great Lume. It is also extremely comfortable & beautifully weighted on the wrist. I have yet to meet anyone say they don't like it. Even people who don't like Rolex seem to like it.

Rolex Yachtmaster two-Tone with white dial would be my choice. If you think you might ever need to sell it in the future then I would go for the full size model.

IMO, the Sub is more classic but the Yachtmaster is extremely beautiful watch - go for it

Thanks everyone for all the great advice! I am actually losing a little sleep over this purchase, I am seeing the watch today at noon. The mid size does bother me a little, but I do have to put it on my wrist to decide that :) I will keep everyone up to date.

I personally prefer the 40mm version. It is a great piece! The picture is of an F serial (2005). However, depending on what you do for a living (ie where and when you plan to wear it) the Sub or Sea Dweller may be better choices as they are less prone to scratches (non ploished bracelets)

I totally agree, get a full sized YM. I dont know if you are looking at a TT or what but a 3 yr old mid for 5k seems a bit on the high side. Would love to see some pics. Personally I love my YM so much that I went and bought an LV so that I wouldnt scratch it up. LOL

I was thinking of getting a mid Plat YM. I watched ebay auctions for months just to get a feel of the market for them, they sit forever and are always relisted. If you want a watch that will give you something in the end for a flip get a full size YM.

Good advice. 35 mm have virtually no resale value.....and come fitted with the Twinlock crown and ladies 2235 movement.

The 40 mm comes with the TRIPLOCK crown and Sub-date/SD 3135 movement.

The mid size may be harder to flip, but it sure is comfortable on my 6.5" wrist. The AD still had to remove 1 link and the adjustable clasp is set as tight as possible, so as I grow older/fater there is room for growth without adding the link. At 35 mm it is about the same size as a full size DateJust. You will never have issues with the crown of the mid-size digging in to your wrist.

Thanks for all the replies again! I saw the watch today, beautiful ..... true though, when i first saw it, I almost thought it was a ladies watch. But when i put it on, it actually fits on my wrist perfectly (me and eq2675 have girly wrist :) I think I decided to take the plunge ... got the price in the low $4's so I'm a little more confident in case I have to resale

The only thing that kinda worries me is that I called up the AD that it was purchased from, their tech answered the phone. When I asked them about authenticating, he said, it'll take me 30 secs to look at it. He said, "as long as ur getting all the paper work for it, ur safe". Well, the seller is a police lieutenant so I'm not really worried, and I met him at his house ... Any thoughts guys?

Saw the watch in person today. At first impression, I thought to myself is this the ladies version? But when I put it on, it fits perfectly on my wrist. So I think I'm going to take the plunge. Since the Mid-size is promoted as a Unisex size, think of your target resale audience as both guys and gals.

Another item for you to smile about is your not taking the New to Used hit like I did. 45 days ago I shelled out $7,410 + 6% tax. Your $1,000's ahead of my initial cost.

I like the Yachty a lot more than the sub. It can be dressed up or worn in grunge. The only reservation I have about it is the ease of scratching the bezel. So if you get at Platty, just wear it and be happy. You can always get it polished at an RSC.
