Which Rolex should a Maestro wear?
Hi all,
I have not posted for awhile and out of curiousity i am posting this topic since no one has ever discussed on this as far as i am aware... I am an orchestra conductor by profession and I have been wearing my SS Sub with my tuxedo while conducting. I love wearing my SS Sub as most of you will already know that it looks fabulous with the white long sleeve and black tuxedo jacket from a Rolex lover point of view.. However, from a non-Rolex lover's perspective, it is not appropraiate for a maestro to be wearing a diving watch on stage.....on top of that, i do feel that the Sub is slightly heavy on my wrist on a lengthy concert or a long hours rehearsal (in fact, I always have the habit of taking off my Sub and just place it on the conductor stand face up from the second hour of the rehearsal)...there are sugestions that I should get myself a first tier dress watch from Patek and Lange... With all respect to these brands, I am just not keen for the reason these fine timepieces are just not known for their strength and robustness... One main reason that I have chose a Rolex is because it is absolutely dust proof..as the violinists tend to produce a lot of "rosin dusts" into the air as they are playing (orchestra players wil know hat i mean)....the concert stage is quite a "dusty" place contrary to what many people think... Now, my question is if I am to get another dressier looking Rolex (may not necessarily be a dress model) to go with my Tuxedo while conducting, which one should it be? Datejust with leather strap, white gold day-date or TT GMT 2c? Explorers, SD and Yachmaster ar out of question as they will defeat the whole reason why I am getting another (i.e.all out sports watch) Cheers |

According to some of the ads, The Three Tenors and a couple of famous women opera singers all wore Gold Presidents. Take a cue from them.

The Bluesy is also a choice, it looks fabulous as it is and i like it very much myself but some of the conservative musicians may think it is a bit too bling (the blue and gold combination plus the 40mm size)...

I think a platinum day date would be cool or something with a diamond dial

YGDD with a black dial with diamonds would be just right.

For awhile, I did consider a rosegold TT datejust with all black dial and diamond markers, but dropped the idea totally as in this country, with all respect, 7 out of 10 businessmen and again 7 out of 10 retirees loitering in Chinatown wear a TT datejust. It is simply tooooooo common here just like in HK.

How about a TT Datejust with white dial and maybe a few diamonds.

I vote for a DD, as well.
One like this one: (Pic from an old eBay listing).

The obvious answer is whatever happens to be on your wrist - since you are a maestro, however I would vote for the new Platinum Day Date (president)

Hmmm... didn't Elaine Benice have a boyfriend once called the Maestro and who rented a villa in Tuscany and then Jerry and George and Kramer ended up at the same villa??
wonder what watch he wore? But seriously maestro, if you're happy with the Sub now and it works for you, who cares what other people think??? But by the way, Patek watches are quite robust. Calatrava and Aquanaut being accessible. |

Hi Jedi,
I was quoted 20.5K Sing Dollar for a brand new Calatrava 5119 after discount, and 18k for a three year old Calatrava 5115, both of which are relatively accessible for a Patek. Enquired on the Lange Saxonia and Richard Lange but apparently both have long waiting list (over 30K Sing pre-discount). My concern about the Pateks is that they may not be as dust proof as Rolex oysters. Like i said, lots of "rosin dusts" and even saliva vapours from the brass players on stage. |

well, if its weight you are concerned with the plat/YG DDs are definitely the wrong choice. you'll be putting those down within 30min they're so heavy. I would probably think about a Patek if you're in that range. Light, dressy, and matches a Tux very well. I'm sure the dust shouldn't be such a big issue..

Two MAESTROS on the board at the same time - this is truly overwhelming!
I have played under a few, and Leon Barzin sticks in my mind as having worn a gold Patek, and making quite a show of it at rehearsals. But he was the only one. Here's a thought - the audience is too much at a distance to notice, and the musicians don't give a crp. Neither does anybody else involved. If there is so much rosin dust flying around then some of your string players are using way too much of it. Cheers, Larry. |

Definitely a Gold Day-Date - a symphony in the art of watchmaking.

Why don't you get a pocket watch, not sure if you check the time while conducting but if you did you could place the watch within sight.
Nice white gold Patek with chain would look very nice. Don't worry about the dust, you're just taking care of it for the next owner, let them deal with it |

There is a reason why they call it "Classical" music.
While you can wear a submariner with a Tux while you conduct, you might as well wear pajamas since they are more comfortable than the tux. This is just my opinion, but I would NEVER wear a sports Rolex with a Tux just for the same reason I would not wear Sports shoes like running shoes or hiking boots with a tux. A tuxedo or tails is meant to be elegant, and as they say "Elegance knows no pain." In my opinion, the most elegant and timeless watch ever made is the Patek 3940. Don't get me wrong because I love Rolex sport watches, but the Patek 3940 is in a completely different league–far, far, far beyond any Rolex currently made. The Patek 3940 seen below is a true Masterpiece. These are not my pics. Quote:

Rolex Prince is quite simply stunning, if only I were old enough.
