Rolex Virgin - Please Help!

Gentlemen,

I'm finishing up law school and want to reward myself with a new Rolex. I'm in LOVE with the new GMT II-C! Problem is I don't want to get ripped off. From my research, a fair deal is anywhere from $6000-$6500 and a GREAT deal will be in the range of $5700-$5999. I refuse to pay anything over $7000, especially after I found out that the ADs get it at a 35%-40% discount.

I've recently join your fraternal club, and truly appreciate the level of knowledge and deference that you show one another. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciate.

I live in Houston, Texas, USA. If any member can help me get this watch locally, I would truly appreciate it!

$5,700-5,900 was the previous price before the April 1st price increase. The current retail is $6,800. If you want to purchase a brand new GMT-C don't count on getting a discount because most ADs will not since this watch is a top seller, unless you are a frequent buyer at that AD. The best you can do Brand new at an AD is probably $6,800 w/o tax if you ship the watch from out of state. But if you can find one pre owned you can definitely get the $5,700-5,900 you are looking for. Good luck with your search and welcome to the TRF!

Getting a used one is likely your only hope. Just wait until someone tires of their. A guy just sold his on the "For Sale" part of this site for about $5600. He needed the $$$ and had to sell. Good bargain for the buyer. If it were me, I'd pay a few hundred extra to be the original owner. You'll have it for many years to come.

GMT II C's are in short supply at most AD's in my area. If you really want one and can buy it at list, you probably should do it.

Thank you all for replying! You guys are wonderful. I just hate to pay $6800 for something that was $5900 two weeks ago. I "might" pull the trigger and pay full price if I exhausted all my options.

BTW, docnagel, I'm very very envious of you watch collection.

I paid the extra to be the original owner on my GMTIIc. I tried the discount route but was not succesful and couldn't wait. I just love my watch. For me, the extra couple of hundred bucks was worth knowing I am the only owner of the watch.

Unfortunately, it's not just a few hundred dollars but a $1000. I just feel like I'm getting ripped off. You know what I mean?

Wish you good luck to find GMT C. It is a beautiful watch! New prices are high indeed and usually there is no discount on GMT C as it is in high demand, but if you lucky who knows...hope you will find one...

Analyse this please:
1. New prices will always be higher and higher. In Feb it was USD 5950, now USD6825, who knows when they have another price rise?
2. There looks like more GMT2c available at AD recently. Walked past ADs here and I have seen GMT2c there much more often nowadays. Supply has loosen.
3. What's your principle about buying new / LNIB/ Mint? Do you "have to get" a new one?
Is buying this piece a "definitive" moment in your life? How do you judge the value of this purchase? perhaps in 10 years' time or 25 years' time? Will you regret in future that you "paid" too much? or you'll be kicking yourself of not getting the lovely piece when you really "want" it to coincide your graduation?
I suppose points 1 and 2 above are contradictory factors. Only you can answer point 3.

Don't think. Feel.

If you're indecisive now, and you pull the trigger, who knows what the psychological aftermath might be.

It if was me, I would try to find one 'as new' and save a few dollars. However, if you buy on the internet you need to be skilled and know what you are doing. If you do not think that is for you then go, as suggested, with cash and see what you can haggle.
Good luck and well done on finishing off your university

Sounds like there's plenty of guidance so far on your pending Rolex acquisition.

I just wanted to say congratulations on your forthcoming Law School Graduation and what better way to celebrate that defining moment than wearing a Rolex for the Ceremony.

Best of luck with your hunt for the right model for YOU.

Congratulations on your graduating from law school! That is quite the accomplishment.

As for looking at GMT II-C's in the high $5000 range, look no further than the classifieds section of this forum and the showcase section of another website known as timezone.

Periodically people will post for sale (FS) ads in both sites of a GMT II-C that are fairly new or in near mint condition.

Before you decide to purchase from a seller, definitely MAKE sure you ask them for references that they may have. These are like feedback from customers of previous transactions they have had. Its like the idea of ebay's "feedback" feature.

Best wishes to you in finding your perfect Rolex GMT and for your future career in the field of law.

However, it is nice to make your first purchase of a Rolex watch straight from an AD as it makes it that much more special.

Jerome

IMO I would buy from an AD because

1. Its your first Rolex...So strike up a relationship with your local AD.He may discount a bit but he will discount more on the second watch and even more on the third.

2. This also gives you the opportunity to try on several models,Go for the one that smiles at you,its said on here many times but its true.

3.Ask yourself how you would feel getting your new law degree with a second hand Rolex on your wrist.

4.Discount and price is important but it should'nt be the main driver in your purchase.

Good luck my friend and well done in your law degree

There's a very reputable dealer online who has this watch like new for $6195.
Don't know if I can post the website on here. You could do a google search for The Time Keeper or PM me.

Even at the new price increase, Rolex still a good buy since it holds its price, not like a car or a boat that worth nothing after a couple of years. Go for the GMT II C. You won’t regret it. It is a watch that you can pass to your children and they will wear with pride. There is a GMT II that is very rare and it is said that will be a good colector´s item. It is a GMT that the 2 comes as two sticks and not in roman numbers. ll vs II. If you find one with an M series, it is almost for sure that will have the new movement that the new GMT II C has. Many people are looking for one of those M series GMT ll.

No troubles; wait another 8 months or so, and you will likely pay $7800 or more for something that was $5900 two weeks ago.....check out the old prices, and with the dollar devaluation, i doubt they will get any better.

do what i did; wait until you pass the bar, then buy what you want; you earned it.

mark

ps. and with all the student loans, another $7k wont even be noticed....

Thank you all!

Just got an offer from a law firm that I really want to work for. However, it's contingent on me passing the bar. I think they were impressed because I had already taken the bar before even graduating. Results come out in 2 weeks. Wish me luck guys!

Again, you guys are all so helpful and WONDERFUL here!!! Thank you for your kinds words! Very rare in the cut-throat legal profession.

If all goes well, I'm so going to buy my beloved GMT IIc and will be posting pics
