1989 Air King problem!
I have a 1989 (I think) Air King. I wear it pretty regularly, at least once a week usually more. It has been running very well for the last couple of years.
About two years ago I noticed a sort of crunching sound when winding, I set it aside for a few days and weirdly enough it just seemed to stop doing it on its own. A couple of days ago I noticed it was slow by half an hour which I thought was weird because I had recently wound it. When I started to wind it, the crunching sound had come back again (I say crunching as oppose to grinding as its not a very consistent sound, sounds like there is motion) Anyway, I wound it anyway (which is probably a bad idea) and I noticed that despite the winding it kept losing time. The strange thing (to me but probably not to those who know anything about watched) is that when I wear it, it loses time, but when I sit it on a table, it stays pretty accurate for a good 12-24 hours. What can I do? Does it probably need parts? Being that it's a 1989 model will Rolex service it? Am I better going to a non Rolex watch repair place? Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can give. I really like the watch but can't really justify spending a ridiculous amount of money on it. Cheers |

It sounds like a dry condition..
If it has never been cleaned and oiled, it's way past time..

Thanks for the replies.
Will winding it in this condition make it worse? And whats the chances of Rolex servicing an old model like this? I've read elsewhere they can be somewhat reluctant to. |

It's a cal 1520 movement, they'll service it. Don't fiddle with it any more, just take it in and they'll set you right

Thanks for the info.
Is taking it to a non Rolex place a really bad idea? If it doesn't need parts, just oiling etc? |

I would stop winding it and get it serviced. Winding it while there is obviously something wrong with the movement will possibly make matters worse. Kind of like starting and restarting a car engine that has internal damage... not the best thing to do.
