Hello from a new Rolex owner - GMT Coke

Good morning esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have lurked off and on for close to a year, but haven't posted much at all.

For the first 5 years of my collecting "career", I've owned Omega watches. It's all personal preference, but I would have been one to argue their merits over any other brand.

That being said, a month ago I came into a Rolex Explorer II M-Series. HOLY COW!! Please again remember that my reference is Omega watches, but I've never owned anything of that quality.

I loved the Explorer, and quickly realized that the thing I liked the most was the 40mm oyster case and the light SEL bracelet that tapered off of the case. It felt absolutely bespoke.

So, knowing what I liked, I needed more.

I have a GMT Coke set to arrive on Tuesday, and couldn't be more excited!!

I went with the P series, so I have the "holes" for easy strap changes, but also the SEL's. I'm also a sucker for lume, so the luminova is nice.

I am so stoked about getting to swap bezels on the watch too! I'm planning on picking up a Pepsi and black for variety. (Sub question...I have an option to buy both for $300 total. They are authentic and new---is this reasonable?)

Anyhow, I just wanted to say hello! I believe I'll be enjoying Rolex's product line going forward and look forward to reading and participating in conversation!

Congrats on the GMT II!

Just to give you an idea of costs over time, in 2004, I bought a new bezel from RSC Los Angeles for $65 (traded in my old one). My GMT II was Coke and I converted it into a Pepsi at that time. I no longer own the watch.

That interesting. Price must have gone down, I was just quoted $48 by RSC Los Angeles to change from black to coke.

Congrats on the watch!! IMHO, $150 per insert isn't too bad. I would probably just do it. For just delving into the realm of Rolex, you have already figured out what took me quite a while to determine. The early 2000s Rolex models are my favorites. Drilled through lugs, SELs, and luminova are a great combination. There is something to be said for the lightweight way these models disappear on the wrist.

Enjoy your new watch

Unfortunately, I would say this is trade-in price. I wish they would let you keep your old insert

Congratulations..

The GMT is my favorite reference, although the Explorer II gets more wrist time since I live in a desert and find myself out in the elements quite a bit..

Prices for an insert (you don't really mean the whole bezel) are still under a hundred bucks (usually closer to 50) from Rolex. Many do indeed get them from private sellers and 100 to 200 seems to be a going price.. So whatever you're comfortable with; in a few weeks you won't even notice...

Great choice for your first Rolex. $150 for a new insert on the secondary market seems to be within the selling range for sapphire crystal inserts.

Enjoy the GMT II, they are one of my favorites also.

Congrats, SEL + lug hole models are great. I got a K serial coke this year and got a new Pepsi without trade in from RSC for $75. Then at service I traded in the coke for all black for $48.

Thanks all! I think I'll go ahead and buy the pepsi/black inserts.

I have an old jubilee Datejust band....and about 20 custom straps. So along with the oyster, I should have A LOT of options with this beauty!

Thanks, all! I think I'm going to get the Pepsi and black inserts. When you add those in with the fact that I've got a jubilee already, and 10 custom straps...there are some fun possibilities coming up :)

The same happened with me, and I now have both of these watches (S serial 16570 Explorer II and P serial 16710 GMT II Coke).

I'm traveling with the Explorer II right now, because the click spring on my GMT II Coke bezel became uni-directional on Friday, the night before I flew out. The GMT II became my favorite because of the gorgeous bezel, SEL, and strong lume.

Where does one typically find genuine bezel inserts for these? I have a Bergeon bezel puller, and think a complete bezel might be easier to do than just the insert. If I'd thought to buy some extra springs n parts I could have fixed my GMT II myself; but the puller was originally for my Omega Planet Ocean, when I changed from black bezel to orange. I have plenty of click springs and retention springs for that one.

Received the watch today. Upon arrival, I was incredibly excited! I then decided to size the bracelet...I took it off to do this. It was really difficult to get off.

Getting it back on is another story. It's impossible. Is a 78790a even supposed to go on this watch. It's difficult enough to even get the end links to fit in between the lugs...impossible to get them in there with a spring bar.

I can't say how disappointed I am with the fact that bracelet swaps aren't feasible.

No joke, I've spent 2 hours trying to get the bracelet back on. This has to be a joke.

Do you have a spring bar tool? Maybe search youtube to see how it's done, it's really easy once you know what you're doing.

Yep...I swap bracelets all the time. I never wear the same strap or bracelet two days in a row, lol. This is just insane. I did get it on. I don't think I'm ever taking it off again!
