New watch but has scratches

Got an early holiday present the BLNR but the retailer claims its new but the case and bracelet has some scratches that are really annoying me.
Am I being too picky? Should I just return it?

That would bother me, I want the scratches on my new watch to belong to me. Sounds strange but I'd return it for one that isn't scratched. That's why when I bought my Sub I went back to the AD 3 or 4 times checking it each time with magnified reading glasses. Keep us posted.

Just sitting here thinking about the OP's dilemma, scratches on the bracelet are one thing, on the case... no way no how would I accept that.

No way, spending that type of money on anything needs to be flaw less. Would you drive away a new car from the dealer with light scratches on it??? Nope

Who cares it's a watch. It's going to get scuffed anyway. Most watches from ads have some hairlines and fine scratches from being tried on, bumping into other watches etc.

Depends where they are. If they are on the clasp, I would ask for a discount because within a month or so, you're going to have some there anyway.

If on the case of the watch or someplace that you don't normally get wear & tear marks, then give it back and ask for a fresh one.

"New" means fresh out of the box and unscathed. That's why you pay a premium price for new. Any flaws or faults found with a new watch should only be due to an error in manufacturing and/or quality control. That's rare for Rolex, so things point to it being worn or handled carelessly by someone at the retailer.

Return it. You paid for a new luxury item, but if it already bears someone else's scratches and marks, it's a used item. If that retailer wants to sell luxury goods, hold them to a luxury standard.

New simply means you bought a watch at an AD and have your name in the warranty card.

Some precious metal models can sit for months, even years and are still considered new. But from in and out of the case, people trying on etc bruises happen.

I do not understand this obsession with something being immaculate as the minute you put it on and wear it scratches will happen.

I should develop a rolex condom that protects the entire watch. I think thats a void that needs to be filled (pun intended)

For now....to everyone thats worried about scratches.....just wrap your watch in scotch tape after the factory stickers have fallen off.

Dr. Tom Kerr may beg to differ from you. His AD gets a watch in still in plastic shipping coffin for him to inspect and if not perfect, in comes another one. Sir, would you buy a new 200K Ferarri that was scratched and dinged? Not me, but to each his own.

I would not accept scratches of any kind on a bnib watch. Return for refund or replacement .

I'd say, it depends. If, for example, you got a really good deal because it was a display model, and the scratches are superficial, then it may make sense to keep it and not ask for a new in box from the factory watch.
On the other hand, if you paid for a new in box watch, not pre-handled, then you should expect just that, with no significant flaws.
Was the watch a display piece or new in box?

New is new. When I buy new I want pristine.

I'd be making some noise, if it were me.

You're missing the point.

The OP isn't talking about scratches he put on his watch. He's talking about scratches that came on his new watch.

In some circles, this is called shop-worn and while the watch is technically new, it is not pristine, which is what most normal people want when they buy and pay for something new.

Maybe you will pay full price for damaged goods, but don't ridicule people who don't see it that way.

The second your name is on the warranty its no longer new, and the first set of scratches that you will inevitably get if you actually wear the thing is just a short matter of time.

There are bigger things in life to sweat than a mere imperfection on a watch. Seems kind of silly to me, thats all....you only live once and have so much time....to be obsessed with a perfect time piece is kind of ironic as you will never get those moments back.

I saw sales person of AD's taking watches out of the showcase almost always hitting the top of the showcase glass. Many of them handle watches with their ring finger. And I every saw one sales person dropped a $100K RM. He simply put it back into the show case as if nothing has happened. And have you seen how some of them move watches from a store to another? And what annoy me is that some AD store watches with their crown unscrewed with crown stem being pulled out and place in a hot lamp showcase. A lot of them don't care, your best bet is to take your time to check for every scratches, dings, date change, alignment of hands (especially Daytona), before committing to buy.

I am merely expressing my opinion that the scratches will happen anyway. And there are no pictures, but I assume we are talking minor imperfections.

I mean seriously have you seen how many wrist shots still have full stickers on them?

Not to be pedantic, I believe the term you mean is shipping casket.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/casket

A coffin is for human remains, even if the term casket is often used in place of the term coffin.

I don't disagree with you, but your comments are not germane to this discussion.

We're discussing a watch that was purchased as new that came with scratches.

Maybe we don't know the whole story, but what is being discussed is not what you're discussing.

So, while I agree with your assertions, they are irrelevant.
