GMT Values
I have been watching the price of GMT's for the past 6 months. I'm I imagining things or has the prices really gone up dramatically?

I don't know about others, but the 1675 certainly has appreciated quite a bit in the past year or two.

Same with the 16700's they have gone up in value too.
But GMT's should appreciate......because they rock!

A topic close to my heart .....
I think the numbers are all getting a bit cloudy just now - with a big difference perhaps between average asking price and average selling price for vintage GMTs.
Almost all vintage GMTs on eBay are now marketed as Buy Now or Best Offer. And many forum sellers also build in some room to move when they set their asking price. So, to get a real gauge for prices actually being fetched, a would-be buyer may need to track a few genuine, low reserve auctions like this one here .... http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTHENTIC-RA...item566f358a16 ..... although they may not find many. Overall though, I'm thinking ... Very good, truly correct examples - values have indeed jumped. Garden variety but still correct - some upward movement Flotsam and jetsom - scruffy and not necessarily correct - values are languishing. In recent times too, have outrageous asking prices ... and very creative descriptions ...for vintage GMT parts, perhaps added to a perception of skyrocketing values ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1675...item4d2b035972 And a bit off-topic, dodgy dealings on questionable 'rare' GMT parts don't make life more difficult for genuine hobby collectors. Take mini GMT hands for instance. Just today on eBay, the same pics appear for an NYC seller and an Italian seller. And the NYC seller is running the same pics for an item he sold - and received positive feedback for - just two weeks ago. I'm confused. Is someone telling fibs .... or is a vintage GMT mini-hand factory up and running .... or both http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Vint...item3f436c5f3c http://www.ebay.com/itm/111567125162...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Apologies to any and all if I'm mistaken on any of the points I've made. |

In general i noticed the prices have increased for all references albeit at different trajectory. The 1675 seems to b the more reasonable one compare to say 5513 or 1665.

Prices for quality examples have risen the past year, and even the past couple years, because the nice, correct watches are drying up fast. I see many GMTs for sale that have replacement parts, incorrect parts or are in average to mediocre condition. The difference in price between a nice, quality GMT and an average quality GMT is no different that other vintage Rolex watch models. The quality watches bring quality prices.

I've seen the same trend. Makes sense, as for the longest time the Submariner was the queen bee of the mainstream vintage timepiece world (as far as menswear publications, forums etc. goes) and prices vastly outpaced other models. I've honestly been expecting this increased appreciation and price-catch-up game for the GMT to be a long time coming. It's a handsome timepiece -- and is subject to another dimension of character (the aging insert) that other timepieces don't enjoy. And it's flashy.
All these aesthetic nuances add to it's general desirability IMHO. It's important to note that the collector's world (which is mindful of rarity) and everyone else (urban professionals in the market for a vintage timepiece) value different things/qualities. I add that because the 1675 isn't particularly rare, obviously. That said, I have a good friend who runs a US vintage watch site and he buys 1675s regularly as they are some of the pieces he moves the fastest. He markets his services through GQ and other menswear sites, so that might explain his credibility among young buyers -- but in any event, he usually gets strong prices for them. Like Omitohud said though, there seems to be more movement among all references. I just think the forum has some members balking, as the 1675 has always been dismissed as an unrare reference due to its long production run. Anyways, I think it's appreciation is well deserved. PS eBay is a funny beast - you have uneducated buyer's buying confidently, and you have spooked educated buyer's turning there backs on good buys. I'd say the prices reflected on eBay are deflated as people are risk-averse when it comes to eBay listings. I think BINs aren't a fair representation of what the market is like in general TL;DR. GMTs makes your grandma swoon and your wallet hide for good reason; and eBay is a scary place. |

I don't pay too much attention to the 16750; and while it is technically vintage it's still pretty recent vintage. But again, I don't pay much attention to 16750 and the above discussion is about 1675s - and my moderately biased opinion was on 1675s.

Yes, the 16750 matte w/plastic crystal watches seem to me to command similar prices to the older 1675's. There is some good value to be had on 16750's with gloss dial w/plastic crystals but even these watches have been going up in price especially if the bezel insert is faded.

In my opinion, the 1675 GMT's, primarily the Gilts but even the early Matte Dials, are the watches that will be appreciating the most quickly in the the Vintage Area. I saw the Explorers jump in price only to fall back down but, the GMT's have been making a slow but, steady rise over the last 2 years. I am currently looking to buy quality examples whenever they pop up.

IMHO 'Pepsi' vintage GMT's will show a sharp increase in price as apparently Rolex aren't going to produce their Red/Blue ceramic bezel on an all steel watch as it's too expensive to produce.... that's what I've been told, but who knows???
Anyone know any different? |
