Why so OCD?

What's with all of these OCD related posts?

Has this always been a thing with Rolex?

It's probably infectious. One person notices something, so everyone else starts worrying about it. Sometimes it's valid (cyclops mag, as we've seen with watches being accepted for return or crystals replaced recently), sometimes not (my hours markers are misaligned, etc).

It gets out of hand sometimes. If you need a micrometer or an electron microscope to notice an "imperfection", I don't think it's an issue.

But to be honest, that low cyclops magnification would annoy me.

We jokingly call it "OCD" but in reality it is just the same healthy level of scrutiny you get with any 'special-interest-group'.
I'm also on Coffee, Wine and Sports Car forums, and they all display the same apparent 'obsession' with the small detail of their interest.
Without this there'd be a lot less to talk about on forums.

Hey, you spend $$$$$$ on a watch, this is the place to make sure there are no problems. Sad thing is, you get better responses here than at my local AD which consists of a pretty young woman in her 20's who doesn't know s#!t about Rolex

You only hear the OCD stuff from a vocal minority, making it appear bigger than it really is. It's still a normal distribution, nothing specific to Rolex. I see it on photography forums as well. If you are the OCD type, it's inherent to you, not a reflection of specific interests or hobbies.

Some issues like the cyclops magnification, is a valid problem and people are posting to see if others are getting the same result. Not OCD in my book.

Somehow I am more concerned with a misaligned hour marker than the latest batch of cyclopses. If you are going to spend 8K on a watch then you'd hope that the watch maker does a better job than your last Casio. A misaligned hour marker is plain sloppy. The cyclops issue is only an issue to those who somehow think it is an issue...

A misaligned hour marker was recently agreed to have been an optical illusion (i don't mean the bezel insert issue). And the cyclops is a genuine issue for Rolex if they are replacing crystals and exchanging whole watches because of it.

One could argue that the whole 'dedicated to Rolex' forum is a bit OCD, surely?!

Sure agree in general with the "obsessive," not so much the "compulsive..."

I'm very happy that it appears to be an optical illusion after all! But illusion or not, it's a good reason to take a closer look. I would not classify it as OCD. The owner genuinely thought there was an alignment issue.

You might well be right about the cyclops, but then again, there is no recall of those 'defective' cyclopses either, Rolex keeps shipping them. So is there really a problem? People seem to be happy with their cyclops until they log on to the rolexforum and find out that their Rolex cyclops is slightly different from older batches, which leads me to agree with the following:

An to top that: opening a topic about perceived OCD in others is the purest form of OCD!

Always try to separate what you see here from the rest of the world. The rest of the watch community is quite normal.

And no,..it hasn't always been the case.

I can understand that when someone pays thousands of dollars for a watch they want it to be perfect & rolex stands for perfection.

OCD is a sliding scale. Rolex is a premium factory built watch so the level of expectation gets blurred.

Really? Someone please show some SEM shots; I'd love to see them. I get the point but I also notice hyperbole when I see it.

No different than other forums. I use to frequent rennlist (porsche) and it was very much the same. Some people would deny delivery of cars they ordered 6 months ago due to a panel crease they thought to be a mm off or two or if the detail shop stepped foot in the same room as thier car!

Chaps

I first came across this forum just over twelve months ago and my honest opinion at the time was that 90% of you were as mad as a fish and the remaining 10% were totally bonkers and beyond medical help.

Today you all seem relatively sensible, other than worrying if you can wear your Oyster Perpetual in the shower or if it is safe to wear your watch because everyone from a six week old baby upwards is actively seeking you out with the aim of ripping your watch off your arm in the middle of a crowded street.

No, you are not OCD, just a little odd.

Regards

Mick - normal chap who times his watch if it is more than 2 seconds out.

MY watch was the one with the misaligned hour markers. If you read through the thread you will see that many people agree with me - I know for sure they are not symmetrical.
