DSSD Servicing

Hello everyone,I have been a 'lurker' for a while and have owned several Rolex sports models in the past.Unfortunately redundancy led to the sale of my much loved 4 line 14060m.Fast forward two years and things are on the up again and I considering my next watch.
I have decided on a DSSD and quite fancy the Mark 1 dial original. These can be had for good savings ATM over new.
My question is that some of these are knocking on the door of nearly seven years old.I would like to purchase and send for a RSC service.Due to the extreme pressure testing required, would Rolex insist on sending back to Switzerland?I can't imagine them possessing one of those Comex rigs per service centre. If this is the case, would the service be much more than the going rate for a normal stainless model.
P.S.I am aware that this thing is huge compared to my last Rolex, however I do like large watches and the DSSD is one of my all steel favorites from the ceramic line up.

Kind Regards

Nigel

I'm not an expert on these, but I'm pretty sure you are correct about the pressure testing. There are some very good fakes of these watches around. Beware.

As I understand it, it has to go to the mothership for service for the reason mentioned.

From Watchuseek would be worth checking with your AD though!

Thank you, this does sound positive.I had visions of my watch waiting in a very large queue with the new models for testing
I have found elsewhere that someone mentioned the cost is much greater than a standard professional model,is there any truth in this ?

Kind Regards

Nigel

Everywhere I have read is the DSSD is the one watch that has to go back to Geneva for servicing due to the equipment needed to pressure test it.

RSC in the UK should have the necessary equipement to service the DSSD. I had mine serviced at the RSC in Dallas. I asked them if they have the necessary equipment and they indicated they do and the watch did not have to go back to Switzerland. Seriously doubt Rolex would service a watch and let it leave the RSC without the proper testing to ensure its depth rating.

Nigel... I did exactly what you are thinking about last year. I bought a DSSD from the sales thread here in May and later on that year (October) I sent it down to the Rolex service centre at Kings Hill, they had the watch for about 5 weeks and returned it with a full 2 year warranty from Rolex.
I did ask them about the water resistance test and they said that watches are serviced and tested to requirements of the model. I did with my dive my watch a few weeks later to just over 100m and all was well.

I can confirm that Rolex do have a Comex machine for testing in the UK.I had the conversation with my AD whilst looking at the new SD 4000.This is an amazing piece so more thinking time required.

Kind Regards

I had my DSSD serviced at Beverly Hills RSC in Dec. 2013; I asked about pressure testing and was told the service and pressure testing will be performed locally and they have the proper equipment to do so.

I thought only Geneva has the pressure tank as well...

Even if the RSC does not have the correct equipment for the DSSD a similar test as for the Sub is sufficient I would say.

Whilst I agree that testing to the specified depth is overkill,I knew, like everything else with Rolex, they would insist the watch is serviced and returned to original specification.I did get the impression that these machines have been added to various RSCs over a time period.Makes sense as they wouldn't all be necessary immediately the model was launched. The AD also said whilst the machine is a Comex device,it is a smaller model of the one in Geneva.Again understandable when there won't be production quantities using it.

Kind Regards

Nigel

I agree. Very few of them get any deeper than the deep end of the backyard swimming pool.

I highly doubt they will let a DSSD leave RSC tested only for 300m....
