Acceptable gift?
First post, I've been lurking here for a while and have learned a lot. Thank you guys.
My father is turning 60 this year, which is a huge milestone birthday in Korean culture. He's always wanted a high-end time piece but refuses to spend that kind of money on himself. My brother and I want to get him a watch and have a budget around 6k. I know my dad has been looking into omegas but I think he hasn't looked at rolexes simply because of the price point. I would love to get him a brand new one but don't think my brother and I can swing it. Do you think it would be better to get a bnib omega or an excellent condition sub-c or gmt from a trusted seller here? Is a used watch an acceptable gift in this situation? |

As for the watch being "used" as a gift, I know for sure in my family it would be no issue whatsoever, but everyone is different in this regard. Likely only you and your brother will know your father well enough to decide if it's an issue. I mean the watch could look almost new and probably still have a warranty left if you play your cards right. Anyhow, good luck! and happy b day to your old man. |

Not sure how the Korean culture feels about getting something "used" but if you can find a near mint with all of the papers Rolex I would go for it.
I know if I got a well researched used purchase like that I would be THRILLED to have it. |

Personally, I would not give a preowned as a gift. Can you stretch the budget a bit and go bnib on a SubC? An Exp II could possibly be closer to your budget and be bnib. Just a thought.

If someone were to gift me a Rolex I wouldn't much care if it was BNIB or used. I wouldn't much care if it was beat up a bit for that matter . You cant really go wrong giving a Rolex as a gift.

For such a special milestone/occasion, I would not give him a pre-owned watch regardless the brand. I'd get him Omega/Cartier in BNIB condition which he'll appreciate and enjoy for many more years ahead. Good luck!

Honestly, my dad is a WIS and he would not mind a used watch but a normal person probably wouldn't understand.. I say if you are concerned about budget you can not go wrong with an Omega, although their prices have been approaching Rolex as of late. You could get a 'mint' or 'near BNIB' watch and he wouldn't ask any questions

Not sure about Korean culture but something used as a gift is frowned upon in my Chinese culture

Welcome Peter. I also suggest new. How about a DJ? A great all around watch.

I'm going to chime in again here and basically go against the grain that although new is obviously ideal, if it means the difference between getting a SubC or GMTII vs. and Omega or Cartier, I would hands down go for the pre-owned Rolex. We're talking about finding an excellent or mint watch here.
As I already mentioned, everyone has different perspectives on these things, if it were my father, I'm 100% sure a pre-owned would be perfectly fine. Only the OP will be able to determine this. |

A new Omega is nice... but a Rolex is a Rolex.

A Datejust is perfect for a 60 year old gentleman and you can get a SS one BNIB within your 6k budget.

Personally I think a gift should not be pre owned unless it is an out of production model. How about a 14060?

I must admit I would go for a Datejust at 60 and you are likely to get new or near new from a trusted seller in that range, far more classic image rolex for a mature gent.

He is turning 60? Would he really want a sports watch such as a Sub or GMT? Or is his personality, at 60 now, more of a sportier dressier type time piece? I'm only asking because I have been associated with many Korean people in both my business and personal life. I guess it would depend on his personality. Would he desire more of a SPORT watch or maybe a DJ or DJ II, best of both worlds with the DJ II...41mm, sporty yet more on the dress watch side as compared to a Sub or GMT. I love them all, but some suit each person more than others. Only you and your brother would be able to determine that. If you have any doubts about BNIB or pre owned...I would hedge your bets and go BNIB. There are some nice BNIB 116300 DJ II for sale here on TRF by trusted sellers, in your budget. Just my 2 cents. Rolex all the way for sure.

This is why I think a nice Speedy would work. Its not pretentious like a Rolex and has some great history. As you can tell from my sig I have nothing against Rolex but I just feel the Omega Speedy will be a good choice for him.

One of my best friends is Korean and very successful. He LOVES the 39mm Explorer and I think you can get one of those under $6k. Also, I would strongly look at a jubilee DateJust.
