Hunting Lionfish and Rolex

Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera for much of the day today because we were hunting Lionfish. Fantastic Day diving though. I hope to be able to load a few better pics tomorrow.

After hunting Lionfish, We brought the fresh kills to our local restaurant. They cooked them up and made us some of the best Fish Tacos I have EVER eaten. They were FANTASTIC

Nothing wrong with eating Fish Tacos in style

Awesome. I saw several a couple of years ago in Grand Cayman. I hope to get back there some day for an actual hunt. I hear they're tasty. Where were you?

BTW did you see this video of the grouper eating a lionfish? http://californiadiver.com/video-sho...g-lionfish331/

It's funny that you ask about the video because I just heard about it today and hadn't looked for the video yet. Thank you for the link

Fantastic Daytona! Love the legible numbers! (Probably important for when you are underwater!

If I am not mistaken, aren't the spines of the lionfish poisonous? I also never had that fish before? Does it taste like other whitefish?

It does taste like other whitefish. Flaky and light......VERY good. And yes......Lionfish are VERY poisonous. One of the divemasters lost the end of her thumb several years ago here.

Lionfish is fantastic. I highly recommend trying it if you ever get the chance.

A restaurant in Grand Cayman.

Actually, this is the resort restaurant and this is a weekly thing that they do. The dive operation takes a group out Lionfish hunting once a week and then the people on the dive get to come back and eat the spoils of the hunt.

That's the best part of these fish tacos........they were FREE if you went on the dive.

There are many in Florida as well. We go to one in Clearwater Beach called Crabby Bills. It is a good deal for the restaurant too. They charge you about the same price as a normal fish dinner and you have to bring the fish.

I don't know anything about Lionfish, we catch sea trout and redfish and they taste delicious.

As far as invasive fish control we have the same issue in central Illinois with the Asian Carp in the Illinois river. There is nothing better than perfecting the cooking of an invasive species to drive the eradication. I think they make it into pet food as well.

that's cool. my first time diving was at a resort in mexico. I told the guy I couldn't swim and he said that was okay. As soon as we got to the ocean floor he took off and left me there and I started floating away, then he finally turned around and saw me and adjusted my weights. Then I got really scared and signaled that I wanted to go up. Then he looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. then he grabbed me and dragged me for 30 minutes and he kept doing these motions with his fingers, but I wasn't able to kick like he wanted me to. then we finally got up to the surface and I didn't know what to do. he said go to the boat and I didn't know how. So I just stuck my head in the water and just kicked my legs and flailed my arms until I got to the boat.

anyhow, never diving again.

Boy, did YOU have a bad instructor!! I can swim but my first diving lesson was in the Dominican Republic & even with a little bit of language problems he made himself very clear to me & never left me alone or even strayed 20 feet from me. You should try it again with a good diving instructor. Did you report him?

it always tastes better when you're the one who made the catch.
and Jason, I love what you've done to that SD. all black-out and that red seconds hand is just a touch of class and a matching Nato to complement and complete the look. outstanding!

Looks awesome!
Some of the local restaurants down in the Keys let us do the same thing with our fresh catch. Perfect end to a good day.

Awsome Day! I hope to participate in a Lionfish hunt here in Florida as you get to reduce the Atlantic of an invasive species that is wrecking havoc on our reefs. Also, it is a great eating fish as well. I believe two minutes in 180 degree F water neutraizes the venom from the spines. As far as the meet goes, not a drop of poison in the body of the fish. I would like to do a Mayland style crab boil with these things. My New England buddies though have had lobster style rolls made with the meat and claimed it was good.
