Considered the SD but sticking with the Sub ND for now
I got my first Rolex a few weeks ago, a beautiful 14060m. I love the look, the feel, the history, all of it. The one snag has been the lack of date. I didn't know how often I glanced at my wrist to get the date.
So I researched and discovered the SD. Seems to be just what the doctor ordered - in that I didn't set out to get a No Date watch but am not a fan (yet :) ) of the cyclops. Luckily I located a locale that has a couple used pre-ceramic SDs and tried one on today. The weight/feel of the watch is indeed heavier than my Sub. While I think I could get used to that (I suspect a properly fitted bracelet will make it wear just fine) the look of the dial overrode the date. I'm surprised in myself but I got sort of hung-up on the date window itself. For some reason, the border of the date window - where it bends in instead of a flat cut - turned me off. I originally went with the No Date 2 liner Sub because it just looked "right" to me. I guess part of the reason of that is the very clean/clear dial on the watch. I've often thought that there are lots of subliminal items that make up a "right look" - like the front entry of a home for example. And while most people don't necessarily notice the details they do notice the sum - and it's pleasing. I think that's where I am on my Sub 2 Liner. I now have one more detail in mind as I look upon the watch that I think simply looks "right". In the end I'm glad it didn't work out for now. I was hoping not to decide I just had to have the SD. Now I'll focus on getting my date elsewhere. If I see an SD in the wild I'll likely tell the owner "great looking watch" and mean it. It's just not the watch for me right now. |

I went from a Planet Ocean 8500 to my first Rolex. SubC ND. After a week of constantly looking for the date I finally broke the habit! 😁 a year later I find that I know the date innately. Could be there are 50 places where the date is displayed prominently on my desk! I love the simple and well balanced dial of the ND. I too have eyed the SD4000. Would be a welcome addition but not a replacement. My ND is a keeper. Good luck!

Similar history. I came to the Rolex from an Omega SMP. I guess I took the date for granted but almost from the day I got the SMP I knew I wanted a Sub. I think i can kick the date habit myself - and just use the wrist glance to appreciate that knock-out 2 liner dial.

I agree that the 14060M is just a beautifully balanced watch. Classic dial!It was my first Rolex also and is not going anywhere. I love it! I have an Exp II now as well [with date of course] and it's great to have 'cos it's part of that design. For you next one consider a Datejust. Beautiful model and all with the date feature so choice is easier.
