The other day I decided to change the batteries in my smoke detector. I took the old one out and put it in my pocket so I wouldn't confuse it with the new battery that was the same brand. Short while later I started feeling a warm feeling On my leg. Fearing an embarrassing moment, I checked and there was no dampness. This feeling on my leg kept getting warmer and warmer are almost to the point of burning me. I reached in my pocket and the battery was Burning to the touch. I had to use a rag to get it out of my pocket. Reaching further down I found some coins and use the rag to pull them out as well. Upon observation there were burn spots on the coins. It was now obvious what happened . The terminals on the nine volt battery were shorted out by the coins in my pocket. Lesson learned!

In Boy Scouts we used to use that trick to start campfires. Touch a bundle of steel wool to both terminals of a nine volt battery and viola, instant flames!

good job you got it in time , they can and do go bang sometimes.you can also link them together in an alternate chain and build up some serious volts

Don't try connecting the two 9v batteries together at the terminals, then you will really see them heat up.

Thanks for maintaining your detectors ! I can't tell you the number of people who call 911 when their detector is chirping , meaning low battery .....

We show up for smoke detector "going off" with no sign of smoke or fire .

I then have to explain to them , or just read it off the detector about a chirp vs. Alarm mode.

Yup, a 9v battery will do that.

A short while ago I placed a metal plate I was working on down on top of a heap of stuff on a desk at my friends shop. I had not realized a gel cell battery was there within the pile of stuff. We left the room for a few minutes and when we came back we noticed liquid nearby the desk. Sure enough after looking around I saw the gell cell under the plate. The gel cell was bulging and leaking and the metal plate was hot to the touch... real lucky that's all it was.
