Wanted a vintage Rolex, not sure what I got...
hey all! purchased my first vintage Rolex on eBay, not sure what I got. wanted one from 1980, the year I was born, to celebrate my new job. the seller had a 100% rating and insists the watch he sold me is from 1980. as you can see on the pics, the back says III 62, which maybe a replacement, but the serial number (827930) comes up everywhere I check as 1952. the seller insists it is from 80, and says the interwebz are wrong. WHAT SAY YOU????

I have an Oysterdate Precision 6694, it has a serial number 5125xxx , dating it to 1977.
You serial cannot be from the 80s... , but the dial and the watch itself look fantastic. Enjoy it, despite the year. P.s. http://www.qualitytyme.net/pages/numbers.html Based on this link 8xxxxx serial is 1962, consistent with your watch caseback. |

You purchased a 1962.
The 8xxxxx would date it as such. |

A 1980 serial would be in the 6.4mil, not 800k serial.

+1. Don't know what you paid but I assume it will be wise to return it.

thanks guys, you all are confirming what my gut and some research already has. I paid 2k for it but as we all know, eBay protection is pretty solid and the seller instantly offered me a refund when I questioned it. he told me he had a special Rolex book that he paid a ton of money for that was the only truly accurate source of dating rolexs and that the Internet was not correct. said he would send me a pic on Monday of the book and the place where it claims this is a watch from 1980. oh, sellers name is ludgatewatches and you can see the original post by this link...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stunning-Sta...p2047675.l2557 plus he had fake pics of the interior of the watch as you can see by the numbers on my pics and the wear around the case back. plus the III 62 doesn't exist in his pic. I feel cheated and want to share this guys identity so somebody else dosent get burned. I also realized how he has 100% feedback.... all his positives are from selling dials and backs and other Rolex parts, not actually complete watches. lesson learned, now back to looking for a genuine 1980 rolex again, lol! |

Previously I said the dial was beautiful (which is still true) but Well, ask someone to check the dial as well, might be repainted! The index markers look too white and overlapin the SWISS marking at the bottom.
I bought a dial from the same seller and the dial was repainted and listed as genuine. No info in the listing and when I questioned - he said I should have asked in advance.. We agreed on a remediation at the end as the dial was really well done , but the things are the same - misleading advertising. Check his other listings as well, full of Franken 6694 he is selling. |

I don't know how an experienced seller could think a manual wind Oysterdate is from 1980. Dial is probably relumed but looks decent. Worth about 900 usd give or take.
Edit: Well, just realized the 6694 WAS made through the 1980's. Not this one though. |

Bracеlet is aftermarket as well ( but at least that is stated in the item description).
1295£ is bit too much for this one... |

Serial number dates it to about 1962, just like the case back says..

Next time ask for a ser# so you can at least have some sort of idea of the year. I'm sure you can find a nice 1980 vintage right here from one of our trusted sellers. hopefully, you'll get your money back and everything will be good! here's my '65. 6694,

Roulex22: return the junk to seller and make your life easy and safer and just buy from a trusted seller on this forum! Jacek, kirill, and there are many others. They will find you a great, authentic 1980. I've bought a beautiful explorer 1 from jacek -- amazing value, box papers etc. Good luck!

I echo GGGMT's recommendation. I've bought a couple of pieces from Jacek at HQ Milton. He has a stellar reputation in the vintage Rolex world and is a true stand-up guy. You can have complete confidence and peace of mind in your dealings with him.
