Work at an AD or boutique?

I am nearing retirement in my long term (30 years) professional career. But like many, I do not want to stay home and watch TV and search the net all day.

Is a job at an AD or boutique possible for a knowledgeable collector? I am not worried if the pay is not terrific, although I wonder if they pay commissions. Any input?

I'd say absolutely yes. I'm considering this too. You are way more knowledgable and passionate about Rolex than most anyone else they could hire.

Perfect for a retiree. I looked into it but I needed full time the AD's in my area have many part-timer people on staff and not many full time positions...plus they like you to be able to speak Japanese!

Great idea! I would do that in a heartbeat if I had an AD more closely located to me.

The number of salespeople at AD's that are less than knowledgable about watches is very high.

Go there, relate to your buyers and make them desire the watch.

I had a huge amount of knowledge and passion for watches before I started working at an AD. Already had owned one Rolex. My customers can tell how much I enjoy watches and it generates interest and excitement on their part as well.

Anyone know that the discount for a salesperson usually is? I'm still in university so int eh opposite situation but do have a good handle on the ins and outs of the lines my local AD sells. Like some of the others have mentioned it wouldn't be about the wage but for the discount

Great idea. You will likely put the other salesmen to shame with your knowledge.

I think it's a great idea and something I would consider myself when the time comes.
Good Luck and keep us updated as to what you decide.

You need to be trained a hobby or something to occupy you could loose them thousands of dollars if you don't close a sale!

This. If you don't know how to be a cheery sales person, we might see an influx of, "Terrible experience at AD" threads appear

A while ago, I had a colleague who used to sell watches and he said he was really good at it (and I believed him). When I asked him what was the number one characteristic of a good watch salesperson, he said without hesitation, " being knowledgeable." Go for it and good luck! (What's the worst that could happen if it doesn't work out?!)

I think AD would be better for collectors to wprk at. Collectors seldomly purchase from boutique hence making no connection with the client. I befriend more AD salespeople than boutiques. Just my IMHO

The sister of a former friend of my wife's worked at Rolex in Geneve (they had a falling out unfortunately!)

Her friend's sister received 2-months paid vacation and a 20% discount on (2) Rolex watches each year.

Bingo. Passion is contagious. And this is how you sell.

Agreed.

I've thought about this too... but I'm only 29, so I have a looooong time to figure it out!

Great idea and good luck, if retired carpenters can work at hardware stores for their passion, I think WIS at AD's makes a lot of sense.

All due respect, you've got bigger priorities than working someplace to get a discount on watches.

OP, sales is not necessarily a way to pass the time. But if your customer service oriented, it seems like a win/win.

I notice a lot of ADs are more knowledgable about sales techniques than the watches themselves. I wonder if ADs prefer experience in sales over actual knowledge of the watches.

Until then you can practice on TRF with the usual "Which should I buy?" or "Should I buy this or this?" threads that come through here often.

You're the type of guy I'd like to buy off

I enjoy visiting Rolex stores all over the world, but I'd say maybe only 1 to 2 in 5 salespeople really have a passion and knowledge for the brand in my experience.

Don't have to know anything about Rolex to work at an AD IMO.
