anyone with explorer 39mm as one and only rolex?

Hello guys...

I'm planning to buy my one and only rolex... I'm planning to buy a piece without a date... so choices were millgauss, 114060 and explorer 1 39mm...

I'm always wearing shorts or rugged clothing so... down to 114060 and explorer 39mm...

many will advise to get a sub if one and only rolex..... but I'm leaning towards the 39mm...

now the question is any member here with 39mm as one and only rolex?

btw I'm planning to switch the straps to rubber and leather from time to time... and i believe its the best model if with strap change as most models looks best/good only with the oyster....

Based on your post, the Explorer is absolutely perfect for you.

I was going to suggest one of the new 39mm OPs until you mentioned switching the bracelet to rubber or leather from time to time, which suits the Explorer much more, IMO.

Agreed, strap changes will work better with the explorer due to the thinness of the watch and less outright sporty character. The explorer will be a little less common too, if that is something that appeals to you.

Exp is a great choice. Do you plan on leaving here after you buy? 'One and only' doesn't last long for most people that hang around this forum.

Love the explorer 1, but the minute hand is too short. Deal breaker for me. Go for the sub.

I bought myself a 39mm Explorer as a 65th year birthday present to myself. I wore it every day for nine months and I regard it as one of the best purchases of my life and I say that as a retired Purchasing Manager.

It is, in reality, the only watch you will ever need, it can be worn with any form of dress, is totally discreet and is the classic example of top end engineering in a plain case. The more you wear it, the more you will come to love it.

I have since bought a 16610 Sub and a Freccione Explorer 2.

The Explorer 2 is a good watch and is also discreet. The Sub is a bit showy and in my opinion a young mans watch because it is too loud for comfort and as such I hardly ever wear it.

So my nirvanna would be the 39mm Explorer and the Freccione.

Explorer is a beauty and definitely a perfect all rounder.
Personally would go for the Sub C no date between the two though.
I love the ceramic, and the rough bezel, the glide lock, the durability. Sub is just good for every occasion, and such a beater.
I also find it much more aesthetically pleasing.
If you are looking for an understated watch however, the Explorer is the best option.

You can't go wrong with either though. All the best!

An Explorer as the only watch is not going to happen. It is just the beginning of a very expensive habit. Kind of like trying drugs and telling yourself you are just experimenting and you will not get addicted.

When I was younger, I was in love with the then 36mm Explorer I. I scraped up enough money for it ( around $3K at that time) and bought one from the big T. For the first year or so, I was so in love with it wearing it everywhere. It was the perfect Rolex that can dress up or down.

After I started wearing my Explorer, I was paying attention to what other people were wearing, especially my friends. As time goes by, my peers progressed in their careers and started to buy more and more expensive watches. The watch bug grew and grew and I too started to buy different expensive watches ( a few thousands is my definition of expensive).

Throughout these years, I have bought and sold some really nice watches including Rolexes, IWCs, Panerais,Bugalris, B&Rs..etc.

So my friend, your idea of one watch for all seasons is not going to last.

was in your position but went 114060 as Explorer left me unimpressed. I didnt like the legibility of the shiny number markers vs the Sub. Also preferred diving watch for ruggedness and due to personal connection to diving world. As for you, seems Exp 1 is a perfect choice, and on right leathers it will indeed look great.

I do not own an Explorer but my brother does and it is his only Rolex. He has no plans to buy another one. He absolutely loves it and wears it everyday.

My Explorer is the only watch I wear. I have a Tag diver, but it never sees any wrist time. As many will tell you, it can be dressed up or down and is not seen everywhere. For what it is worth, I did not buy a Sub for 2 reasons; I had a diver and one of the Boards I am on has 40% of its members wearing a Sub- I didn't want to make it an even 50% Sub owners!
Having said all this, you really can't go wrong either way, they are both great watches. Wear what speaks to you.

Trying to pick one Rolex is nearly an impossible task. I've been doing the same thing for a year and for the life of me can't decide which one to go with. I think, like others have said, I'll end up with 2 or 3 when it's all said and done. I've flirted hard with the Explorer. It still might be the one I go with, but I'm still considering the Milgauss, Explorer 2 and the DJ2. If I can get it down to one model, the choice of color is equally difficult. I guess that's one good point for the Explorer. If you pick it, you don't have to pick a color! Good luck and let us know what you go with.

The Explorer is versatile, but I wouldn't think it would be your only Rolex. I feel it is a great daily as it flies below the radar!

after a few years into the watch game, i finally picked up a Rolex Explorer earlier this year. it has been my daily beater for everything.... desk diving, skiing, hiking, and i anticipate this Summer for swimming, going to the beach etc. it has picked up a few faint scuffs on the polished bezel and i think they look great! for me, this is the perfect "one watch".

i do have another Rolex.... an old 5513 Sub from my birth year. it used to be my daily, but not being to swim with it was a downer.

Anyhow.... I attached a couple of pix. My old 5513 and my 214270 with a black RubberB strap. Been digging the look of the RubberB and it's been feeling good on the stand up paddle board also :) Btw, as much as I love my 5513.... I definitely live with the 214270 as my only watch.

It certainly could be a one and only, I don't know if I can ever bring myself to be a one watch guy but this is the one I would try with. It is simple yet dressy yet rugged, yet elegant. I always liked it but could never get past it being 36mm now that it has grown a bit it has made my list of must owns.
