GMT with 1/2 hour adjustment ?

Hello. I have coworkers scattered around the world in different time zones. I currently have a dual time zone watch (large main dial for local time, small independent subdial for a second time zone).

I am interested in getting a GMT one of these days. My challenge is that I mostly communicate with coworkers who are 4 hours behind me or 8.5 hours ahead of me. My AD would love to sell me a GMT-II and has suggested that, although the GMT-II only handles full-hour offsets, that I handle the half-hour problem by rotating the bezel.

Any suggestions for Rolex (or non-Rolex) GMT watches that aren't limited to full-hour offsets?

Maybe move outside of Newfoundland? Lol, I cannot see how you would be able to do that with a gmt, the bezel would not help either.

The only watch with 30 min increments I know of (and own) is Breitling Emergency Titanium with UTC, that way you get 3 time zones. The only other 3 time zone watch is Breitling Superocean GMT 2011 model, which has inner 24hr bezel and outside rotating 24hr bezel, but not 30 min increments.

I was actually in Newfoundland last week and had my GMT but I found my iPhone was a more practical and easier than trying to figure it out on my watch. Like a Submariner how many Sub owner actually use it as a dive watch?

That is the answer. After a hard landing that moved the GMT hand about 45 minutes off that is what I had to do. Move the bezel to compensate.

Assuming your AD is trying to sell you a new GMTCII, his claim of using the bezel to tell you the time will not work as the current ceramic model has a 24 click bezel.

The best way to handle the half hour offsets is with a dual time zone watch that keeps the 2nd TZ on a separate subdial with hour and minute hands. Problem then is it won't give you the 3rd time zone you need.

I'd get the Rolex and just add or subtract the half hour. Easy enough to do once you are familiar with it. If it's an 8.5 hour offset just turn it 8 clicks and add a half hour, or nine clicks and subtract a half hour.

I think you're limited to a few Breitlings and come other obscure GMT's for 1/2 hour increments. Why not just do some simple calculating in your head and get the watch you really want?

Not sure how this helps much since you still read the the minutes off the dial and the minute hand will still be off by a half hour.

I suppose you can use the position of the GMT hand relative to the hour to determine if you need to add or subtract a half hour, but that's about it.

For a general GMT watch, the Glycine Airman is worth a look as are various Grand Seiko models.

Probably not what you're looking for, but the new Speedmaster X-33 will handle UTC and two additional timezones with 15mins resolution differences.

Other solution is any 5- or 4-digit reference GMT Master, with the free rotating or 120 click ratcheted bezel.

Glycine makes a watch with 3 complete movements. I had one before. Model Airman 7. Its HUGE but actually quite comfortable.

It uses 2 small ladies movements and one big one.

Yeah, a few, including India. I believe there are a couple on quarter hour time as well. Don't ask me why.

I'd get a dual time with a smaller subdial for the 2nd zone that has both hour and minute hands. Or just get a G-Shock with both a dial and digital read-out for the 2nd zone.

The Omega Skywalker X33 has 3 time zones, I'm not sure if it has half hour adjustments though.

Edit; Looking at the instructions it seems that the 3rd time zone can be set in increments of 15 minutes, so it should be possible.

Yes, and it is handled in a very clean and professional way, IMO. The only time/date you actually set to the second is UTC.

Then the two additional time zones (T1 and T2) are set as offsets from UTC, with 15mins resolution.

T1 is intended as "local" time, as the analog hands are permanently synchronised to this time.

I eventually found solutions that worked for me.

Watch #1 is a vintage Tag Heuer 24-hour GMT similar to a Rolex GMT. It has a GMT hand and a rotating bezel. I find 24-hour times unpleasant to use, particularly if the call is at 2AM and my brain is barely working, and I abandoned this watch as soon as I found a watch with an independent 12-hour subdial.

Watch #2 is a vintage Seiko with a 12-hour hour-and-minute subdial at the 6 position that is meant as an alarm setting but that can also function as a second time zone subdial (the trick is to set the subdial hour and minute hands at an offset from the main dial and then both hands advance showing the local and remote times). I liked this watch very much. It handled the 8.5 hour offset and was easy to read.

Watch #3 is a vintage Seiko chrono with a 12-hour hour-and-minute subdial at the 6 position (same story as above ... an alarm feature that can be used as a second time zone). I like the chrono and time zone features but I found the dial hard to read (I'm in my 60s).

Watch #4 (my favorite) is a vintage Tudor chrono 79270 with 12-hour movable GMT bezel. I can set the offset in an instant (some days, I deal with five different time zones). It has a date, chrono, and rotating bezel numbered 1 to 12.

The new Tag Autovia is a visual and functional clone of the Tudor 79270. My AD wants to sell me a Tag Autovia or Rolex GMT but there's no benefit to me.
