White Gold Sky Dweller

This would be my first Rolex.
Wanted input from some members more experienced in the (Rolex) watch world.

I understand the styling is controversial to some, but I really like the way it integrates all complications in a unique way. I also appreciate that it is a newer in house developed movement and the annual calendar function and command bezel is very slick.

I am not into "bling" or otherwise ostentacious displays.
I think the 18K white gold version is appropriately understated.

Plan of wearing this everyday to work but also with shorts and T-shirt.
Only small concern is maybe it is not "sporty" enough to be appropriate with more casual dress.

So bottomline--is this too much of watch to be used as a daily beater??

it is an awesome watch and especially in WG is a one watch do all go anywhere watch, great for daily wear or special occasions!

To the OP

The Sky Dweller is the perfect watch, it tells you everything from seconds, minutes, hours, days and months. It also distinguishes the number of days between months.

It also has a GMT function, so you have everything you need.

For a mechanical watch, that is something spectacular and it is a watch I am seriously debating to buy myself and frankly I would sell my other Rolexes because the Sky Dweller makes them all redundant .

The only drawback is its size, if you can live with that, then go for it.

Regards

Mick

I personally think that gold is quite difficult to manage everyday. Gold is very soft compared to steel.

And also a gold Oyster bracelet looks too blingy for comfort and attracts the wrong sort of attention..

Plenty of people wear gold as their everyday watch. It'll get marked up but so will steel.
I say go for it.

Welcome to TRF. It's a beautiful piece although I'm not sure I'd refer to it as a daily beater

Yup, I like this watch for all of the reasons you stated. In particular, GMT function is very useful for me to keep track of time in another timezone. Annual calendar function is an interesting horological complication, but practically speaking it is not that difficult to reset the date five times a year. Still, I find it useful while signing documents ... all you need is month and date.

The new movement is fantastic. On an average the watch tends to gain ~ 1sec/day. But from what I understand, any movement can be regulated to achieve that kind of accuracy.

The ticking sound seems to be a bit louder than usual ... but I could be wrong. It is really a pleasure to see the instantaneous SAROS calendar in action ... I have posted few videos on this before.

The white gold is definitely more understated than RG or YG, IMO. The strap version (black dial) is even more understated. But the feel of the WG bracelet is amazing. I have mine on bracelet (white dial) and it is undoubtedly the most comfortable watch in my small collection. Don't think the strap will be as comfortable.

I have been wearing mine almost everyday to work since last summer so in a sense it is my daily beater. It does seem a bit too dressy for casual occasions (due to the fluted bezel and Roman numerals) but may be we are overthinking it. In fact most people don't really care about other people's watches.

Best of luck in your hunt. And finally a wrist shot ...

OP - Sounds like a reasonable decision to me. I see no issues wearing a WG everyday and think it dresses down a lot easier than YG.

Wow...that's a heck of a first Rolex.

My opinion: At that price point, I would look at the WG GMT if I was looking at a travelers watch that would fit in with casual clothing as well...but there is no logic to the watch business...if the SKD is what you want, go for it.

Amazing wrist shot. And your observations are spot on, IMO.

White Gold Sky Dweller

Love the Skydweller! Jeans and t-shirt, too.

As far as what constitutes a daily beater, I think that comes down to your W-2.
Beautiful watch, but paired with shorts and a t-shirt I say it would be like black socks and sandals. My $.02.

White gold is probably the most versatile of the sky.
I normally wear a large Panerai, and still found this to be quite large, probably the mix of both size and weight.
For the complications it has, it's a decent price. As someone else has said, go for a newish used and get a sub or GMT for super casual wear.
Either way, you'll enjoy it and congrats.

Completely agree. If they could downsize it to 39 mm, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

The size lends it a casual/sporty appearance but can be used for dressy.

I would not get too hung up on dress/casual. It's a spectacular watch. Wear what you like with what ever you are wearing

well, it's large and has some very bright and shiny bits (large fluted bezel, polished case and PCLs), so, there is some "bling" even with WG, but, it is a very nice dress-up/dress-down watch.

Thanks guys!

To the OP ... one more thing about this watch is that it is pretty heavy and thick. If you prefer heavy watches with strong wrist presence you'll love it.
