Just saw National Treasure with Nick Cage yesterday (the first one). Has anyone noticed that there is a part during the movie where he asks a woman for a hundred dollar bill to find something on it relating to his hunt. Cage then says you can hold onto my dive watch, its called a submariner, and its real expensive. I don't know why he doesn't say Rolex, but nevertheless, during the movie, you can see close-ups of the watch, and it is a SS Sub w/date.
How classy?

Yes it's a known and much talked about fact that he wore the sub in both of the natl treasure films. Pretty cool I think

This has been spotted and duly noted before.

Yep, Nicholas Cage... Kinda been a long road since Raising Arizona. Last movie I think I actually liked w/him in was Lord of War. National Treasure (1) wasn't bad but, too formulaic. Some light chemistry between him and Diane Kruger. Comic side kick, Justin Bartha was just plain annoying. Jon Voight needs to get a new agent so he can try and be cast as something, well, other than what he's always cast as. For a moment, I thought I was watching Tomb Raider again (aarghh).

Back to his Sub, kind of weird he didn't just say it was a Rolex. His skirting the word was probably intentional and something to do with 'unauthorized' product placement.

For better or worse saying "Rolex" in a film sends a very specific message. To the unwashed masses it's a bit cliche. The filmmakers may have been trying to avoid sending and unintentional message. Of course part of it will be that Rolex is well known for not paying for product placement and this may well have been a factor.

Over in the Porsche community we ( at least I) will often avoid telling people I'm active in the Porsche club, and say instead I'm active in a car club, or a sports car club. As soon as you mention a luxury brand some people can get all glazy eyed and stupid. Not everyone by a long shot, but some people.
