Why Rolex decreased the size of the Day-Date to 40mm...

...to make room for the Day-Date Annual Calendar, of course!

Take a 42mm Sky Dweller case and add one new 40mm Day-Date. Seems like a no brainer to me.

it basically means that Rolex thinks the large watch trend is over, this is the first case where a manufacturer shrinks the size of a popular watch model (correct me if I am wrong)

Personally, I'd say no one knows. And IMHO, larger watched are not a trend. It's something for everyone. Hence, many many different watches and styles.

And Rolex has quite a few large models so I can't imagine that being their motivation.

That would be nice! I like it better than the Sky-dweller.

There have been others, I can think of two right now: JLC Master Control from 40mm to 39mm, and Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar from 42mm down to 40mm.

Dissenting opinion - i don't like the above photos one bit. If it was well implemented by Rolex, then maybe....

Doubtful but who knows with rolex. I would gather someone higher up thought it was better proportioned at 40mm and I tend to agree.

I don't think 42mm is large, over 44mm maybe. Plus we get a lot of new members here who claim the Daytona is now more of a women's watch and indeed the gold models seem to be like the black sub for women with means and style, so Rolex know that all types of watches sell and will cater to all different wrist sizes.

Pic looks great and I'd be interested too at 41mm, at 40mm it's probably a bit too much of a squash and will probably feel like the DSSD with it's small dial.
