Could I ask some advice on a watch offer & a USPS money order?
Hey all,
I've been offered to buy an Omega Seamaster 2255.80 in 90% condition (by Timezone standards) for $950.00 It comes with all boxes, cards, hang tag & all bracelet links. This person has an Ebay account with 12 positives all buying. He says he is not set up to accept Paypal but tells me that he has been told that a USPS money order is the safest for both parties, in that if a seller reneges on a deal, it is a federal offense. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? As a Canadian could I even go after someone who reneges on a USPS money order in the USA? Any advice is as always greatly appreciated... REN

I've dealt with this sort of thing in the past. Nothing involving a personal purchase, rather cases involving theft and or fraud with mailed payments. A USPS money order is very easy to cash. A $5 fake ID can get it cashed for you at any check casing place. As far as it being a federal crime, it is, if the feds decide to take it. Otherwise it will be remanded locally to the jurisdiction where the money order was sent and or cashed. The USPS can trace the money order right to the check cashing place and wala! a fake ID for John Doe. As long as the guy that cashes it is anything but a complete moron he is almost impossible to catch. A USPS money order is as good as cash. Almost anybody will cash it as long as it's authentic.
As far as dealing with e-bay, unfortunately I have done this also. Once an incredible amount of effort is spent and a subpoena is obtained e-bay releases to your case Detective enough information to let you know that they do not require any type of credible ID to accept a seller as who they say they are. basically if they want to rob you they can and pretty much get away with it. I'm not saying that the seller is dis credible. He may be a saint for all I know. but I have handled several cases involving e-bay, as well as, several methods of payments being involved. Unfortunately a USPS money order is one of the most difficult to trace to an actual identity because it is almost as good as cash and almost everyone will accept them.

Thanx for the advice, it's as I suspected, there would be no way really for me to recoupe any of my $$$ if he decided to disappear with it if I end a USPS... I'll tell him that I want an Ebay auction made and that the money will be sent via Paypal or nothing at all. I asked him about escrow as well, so we'll have to see... he is a Timezoner as well so I'll get his ID from there and check him out a little more before he's sees a cent..
